90% of the time it is the motor that starts burning. Very little else to cause this. On the oddest occasions there would be wiring burned but that would not allow the unit to switch on if that were the case..

Why does my vax power 2 cylinder hoover make a noise and smell of burning rubber when I turn it on we have cleaned inside and out and all filters

That is the smell of perhaps burning insulation when there is excessive current going into motor. If something in unit is binding the motor will not spin fast enough, generate less back emf, use more current, overheat and burn out!!!!!!!!!!!

If it has a drive belt and that is rubbing up against something and not turning properly that will also cause the smell.

Do not use unit in this condition -you risk permanent damage.

Burning smell and noise from vacuum

The roller head may be turning, but something could be rubbing and causing the belt to slip slightly. I'd remove the belt and beater bar and look for foreign material that is stuck

Vax v-091 burning smell and clunking noise

Is there something stuck inside, underneath, being turned along with the motor? burning smell usually means something got caught and the belt snapped. Not expensive and don't know if it's an easy DYI. Shouldn't cost too much to have it repaired or you can google the brand and model and the word belt, see what you find.

My dc24 has started making a loud noise which seems to be coming from the ball. I switched its off when it started to smell of a slight burning or warm smell. Vacuum is only 2.5 years old, filters are...

Sounds as if there is something stuck in the vacuum causing the beater bar to stop turning while the belt continues to turn giving off the burning smell.

SWEEPER SMELLS LIKE SOMETHING BURNING, BUT WORKS WELL. DOES IT NEED A TUNE-UP AND CAN I DO THIS MYSELF?

I would check if the drive belt has a scorch mark on it, you may have caught something that temporarilly jammed the belt causing it to slip hence burning smell. I wouldn't suspect motor or anything serious as it works. So if need be change the belt. May be worth checking if the roller is turning it may be jammed.

Vacuum smells like something is burning

Ok...Check the brush roll is free not sticky..Next is the belt okay, not jamming on the brush roll making the burning smell...You could take off the roll and run motor on its own ..finding out if its the motor..

Burning smell when vacuuming, not belt

Try turning the vacuum on and hold the base up so you can see if the roller is turning. Odds are it is not and what you smell is the belt burning (not literally). If the roller is not turning, look for anything that is binding it - after you have unplugged the power cord. Probably the roller head is not fully aligned with the retention lugs that hold it in place or the belt is not properly placed on the roller itself, or if it is a used model, hair and twine can get tangled in the roller and cause it to stop turning.

Smells of burning

You may either have something caught up in the under part of the vacuum or the belt may be broken or partially broken causing it to smell like that. Try laying the vacuum flat on its back and plugging it up. Then turn it on and see if the brushes spin and if they do not, then you will need a new belt which is not expensive. Then check the bristles and the thing that holds up the bristles to see it there are any strings caught in them causing it to smell of burning. Take the strings out and then try it. It should stop smelling of burning.

Burning smell and smoke

When you turn it on....is the belt turning the brushes? Something may be caught causing the brushes to stick and the belt to just grind the brush assembly.
