Question about Samsung HLN617W 61" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

(4) Light Tunnel Mirrors Came Apart

HLN617WX LIGHT TUNNEL MIRRORS

Mirrors are "OK", glue separated and broke away.

Want to glue back together. Are there photos, or procedure?

Don't know if smaller mirors are Sandwitched between larger mirrors side surfaces, Or But-Ended to larger mirror outside edges, Or Crevase Glued with inside mirror edges just meeting?

What type of Glue or Standard Quick Set Epoxy?

Have Infocus X2 projector. When on a dark shadow line appears down the left side of screen. Could it be a bad lamp?

no it is not lamp problem. it must be light tunnel problem.
after lamp there is tunnel for light travel, made from 4 pieces of mirror.
this tunnel is glued. glue tend to break in time so the tunnel is no longer doing its purpose.
open this part of projector, there should be 2 little screws holding it. repair it by reposition mirrors and glue them from outside by little drop of temperature resistant and elastic glue. that's it !

Mirror or light tunnel collapsing

A weakness that you might experience with your projector is the collapsing of the light or mirror tunnel. Not sure if this is common to DLP projectors only. The symptom is that you see grey bands or shadows on the edge of the TV image - this is caused by a mirror getting in the way of the bulb light. The glue holding the mirrors together seems to weaken over time (3000 lamp hours in my case) and causes one or more of the mirrors to loose its position. For solution, search for "mirror tunnel" or "light tunnel" under all projectors. The problem seems to be quite widespread. I managed to fix my LG's.

I wonder why the manufacturers don't use a rectangular glass tube that is mirror plated on the long sides ?!?! Suppose they want to sell new projectors after lamp or mirror tunnel expiry!

Loosing picture

if it is over half your screen it is most likely the light tunnel under the colorwheel. If you have had it awhile the glue that holds the tunnel together deteriorates and they just fall apart. Or, the mirror inside the lens assembly may be knocked out of whack, but it's probably the tunnel.

The upper left corner of the screen (triangular shape, approx. 8" vert. and hor. from the corner) is showing dimness, not completely dark but maybe halfway. What might be causing this? Thanks.

This is your mirror tunnel. Light passes through the mirror tunnel to the DLP. The tunnel is made up of 4 mirrors glued together. Over time the glue comes apart and the tunnel shifts.

It starts out like this: |_|
and when the glue breaks down it does this: \_\

So the light, instead of passing through the mirror tube, goes through the ends of the mirror, so you get SOME light but not all.

I contacted RCA and they said:
"Ok, well sadly they do not offer the light tunnel anymore, which is what you need. Sadly you would be rendered to get a whole new light engine assembly. That would be the D.N.D module, light tunnel, color wheel, optic spanner, and oci. mirror. Your best bet would be to search ebay for a broken engine and replace it that ways. "
Awesome support! NOT! (That is the actual full text of the message from RCA support.)

I have some high temp epoxy and will be attempting to re-glue the parts myself.

I have a 5 year old RCA 61LPW42 HD DLP television. A few months ago a small dark shadow appeared in the upper left corner of the screen. Over time it has creeped down and become larger. Still starting...

It's the light tunnel. The tunnel is a square tube made up of 4 mirrors glued together.

It looks like this from the side: |_| (with a piece on top too.)
When the glue breaks down, it shifts inside the little mirror holder. The shifted mirrors looks like this /_/ what you are seeing is the shadow of the tilted mirror tunnel.
ON the RCA's there's not a good fix.

RCA's response:
"Ok, well sadly they do not offer the light tunnel anymore, which is what you need. Sadly you would be rendered to get a whole new light engine assembly. That would be the D.N.D module, light tunnel, color wheel, optic spanner, and oci. mirror. Your best bet would be to search ebay for a broken engine and replace it that ways."

That is the ONLY response I got from them.

I took the set apart and found the 4 tiny mirrors. I will be attempting to epoxy them together. (The set is dead anyway, why not try?)

Shadow on upper left corner

A little late and you've probably already solved it or are just living with it or are disgusted with it and have discarded the tv. But, in any event - here we go. The "light tunnel" bends the light toward your screen. At the beginning of that tunnel there is a plastic lens. The lens is secured with four little feet that a part of the lense. The lens is flat on the side closest to the screen. It fits on the end of the light tunnel closest to the light. The lens probably has a burnt spot. Probably the burn is caused by excess heat which is either a result of a fan failure or a one-time situation where the power went off while everything was hot and there was no cool down cycle. Another item to look at is in the light path before that lens. There is a small "window". It's actually a very thin piece of glass (about 1"X1") held in place by a horseshoe shaped clip and one screw. I think that glass has the purpose of keeping heat away from that plastic lens. If that glass is broken I think you'll have a heat "leak" and the plastic lens will continue to get worse.
