I dropped the drive from about 1foot onto a solid surface, when its turned on it sounds fine but when i try to access files it starts a clicking noise and whilst showing some thumbnails generally goes into "not responding" any suggestions please ? can I fix this myself ?

Thank you for taking the time to help.

Bad news is; did the ADD thing and pulled it apart thinking the noise may have been a fan out of alignment - Not that simple , and who would think you would have to resort to a hacksaw to pop that lid ! ;) No , I jest, but it was a task. It was probably out of warranty anyway

First issue is - based on the limited info I have given you - would you think are the files retrievable ?

If so, is that possible for a layman to do, or is it a tech job ?

Unless you suggest its a simple repair and worth getting fixed, ( I would like the files )i was resolved to upgrading it as soon as $$ possible .

I suppose i'm hoping the problem is a common result of
impact, and theres a simple fix i can do with the end of a coat hanger and a bit of chewing gum .... :1

    Thanks again

I was wondering what is the easiest way for me to put my videos from my RealPlayer account onto a thumb drive.

Hi Bill,
I understand you want to copy video files from your RealPlayer Cloud Account. onto a thumb drive/ flash drive. I don't use RealPlayer Cloud, however, in all internet based accounts, you can access your files and manipulate as you wish.
Try selecting a video file (from the cloud account) you want to save on the portable drive and right-click on it while being highlighted. Check the drop-down option and see if there's an option for copy. If yes than, you can select all the wanted files and copy them to the thumb drive.

SimpleTech 320GB drive keeps dropping in and out of connection when I open files on it.

You could try opening the enclosure and remove the drive and use it in anoter enclosure or sata-to-usb cable.

Usually for a clicking sound it is the hard drive that is causing this. Try if you can still access safemode. Press F8 continuously after turning on the computer. If you can access that, backup your files and do a system restore to a previous date when the computer was working fine. If that wont work, reinstall the whole operating system. If still not resolved, replace the hard drive.

External Hard drive wont show files or name

Even though you may hear the motor turning in your external drive the drive may not be able to read the information on the platter(s) because the arm isn't working. This cannot be fixed; you'll have to buy another external drive.
There are services that can retrieve the data on the broken drive. Google "data recovery services" and prepare to spend big bucks.

Lightly Dropped Seagate 100GB External Hard Drive

Unfortunately, this probably means the read/write heads were jarred and can no longer function properly. That's usually fixable, but it's a very expensive fix because the parts are inside the hard drive and the data surfaces are very delicate... Most people are better off simply replacing the hard drive unless the data is absolutely vital.
