Question about Kenmore 61282 / 61284 / 61289 Top Freezer Refrigerator

Open Question

Kenmore refrigerator 106.61282100 won't cool. Fans are operational and I hear an occasional clicking sound (relay?) I measure 120V AC out of the run capacitor (part #2169373) ofter every other click (0V otherwise). The compressor is warm but not turning on. My wife reported a burning smell before she noticed the fridge wasn't cooling. I can detect a slight smell as well but I can't locate it. Can you suggest any other debug steps, or do you think the compressor needs to be replaced?

SOURCE: Sears Kenmore 53652300, doesn't cool

This usually indicates that the compressor is working too hard and drawing too much current. The click that you hear is a safety shut-off. Possible causes of this are numerous and usually require having a professional come in to fix the issue, it can range anywhere from a faulty compressor to a bad start relay.

There is in most cases a temporary fix, it is called a hard start relay/capacitor. It is usually available from an appliance parts retailer for around $15 to $20. Installation instructions are included, just be sure to unplug your refrigerator first and make sure that someone following you can repair from where you left off. This relay assembly can normally get you up and running but it should not be used as a permanent fix. This will not correct for a refrigerant leak in the system.

Check your refrigerator owners manual before making any repairs or modifications to your refrigerator, there may be an extended warranty on the sealed system and compressor.

SOURCE: Refrigerator not cooling

Clicking sound is most likey the overload on the compressor. You could have one of 2 problems,The compressor relay and start capacitor may be defective therefore not sending the correct power to start it up properly, this is a common part that burns out on any refrigertor. Worst case scenerio... It may also be a bad compressor. If the compressor mechanically seizes up it will try to start and draw high amperage.

The only way to test which one is the problem is buy using a compressot test kit or you can try your luck and change the start relay and capacitor which will run you about 40-60 bucks give or take.

Kenmore elite refrigerator, both are "luke warm"

Sounds like your start relay/capacitor is fubar. The clicking is caused by the Klixon shutting down power to the compressor when it does not start properly. When it cools it resupplies power only to overheat and click when it shuts down again.

Not cooling; relay clicks; compressor runs for 5 sec then stops.

Is the compressor actually starting or is it humming? If it is humming, then it is probably your capacitor, which would end up costing about $20 for the part, much cheaper than a new refrigerator. I feel that this is most likely your problem. If the compressor has a starting relay, this could also not being operating correctly. If you carefully disconnect the capacitor, you can check the mfd rating with a multimeter. You can also check the starting relay (if applicable) with the multimeter set to measure continuity. Hope this helps. BTW... A new starting relay, called a CCR, or Current Coil Relay, will probably run you about the same, $20.

Hear relay clicking on and off, refrigerator is

I would suggest repairing the unit . For less than $ 75.00 , compared to the cost of a new refrig . The problem is the overload/relay , which is plugged onto the side of the compressor , with 2 or 3 wires going to it . This is easily replaceable . If you had given the model number , I could have given you a part number . Be sure to take it ( model number ) with you , when getting the part , so you get the correct part .

Unplug the Ref for 15-20 min., plug it back in and listen for the compressor to start. You will need to be behind the Ref so you can tell if the compressor or the fan is running. It will help to take the cover off so you can see the compressor.
Compressor not running but you hear a clicking noise. The relay needs to be replaced.
Compressor runs but not cooling. Low on coolant
