Have you tried plugging to another usb slot?

If it doesn't work, try replacing your usb cable.

My external drive is broken, how do i open i up to fix it / recover my data?

Look for hidden screws under any labels or rubber feet. Otherwise it is likely friction fit together with tap and slot locks. Then you will need to pry it apart. Your best option is to open, remove the harddrive you find inside and install into a new external hard drive chassis. External hard disk delay

Your drive has most likely developed bad sectors, if your data is precious do not run software recovery programs over it since this can stress the drive and cause it to fail completely, take it to a data recovery company. If you do wish to try it yourself use an imaging tool like dd_rescue for linux, also remove the drive from the USB enclosure and connect the drive directly to the machine.

My hard disk on nx9420 failed (i get the message 'critical error - imminent hard disk failure, save all your data'; but the computer will not boot (just says press 'control alt delete')....

This warningmeans the hard disk will fail sometime in the near future. You need to back upyour data regularly before the hard disk fails or you will lose your data.
When the hard disk fails, you need to replace with a new one and installWindows on the new hard drive to get your computer working again.
If you cannot boot up your computer then -
Remove the hard driveand connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer detects it as an external storage deviceand you can open the various folders and files then back up your data.
If not you are in trouble, there are companies that can recover data fromfaulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 which instead of openeing is opening a window telling me to to format my drive, and if I do that I will lose all my data,How can i restart the drive without re-formatting?

Don't be panic. you can try some data recovery software. You can see
http://www.asoftech.com/articles/how-to-recover-deleted-files.html
It tells the steps how to perform data recovery.

If above does not work, you may have to format the hard drive (use quick format), and then use above file undelete program to scan again the hard drive and recover your files

Toshiba Hard Drive Crash

Hi,
if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.
