Question about Dell XPS M1330 Laptop

2 Answers

I changed out the cmos battery on my Dell M1330 laptop a few weeks ago because it would not keep system clock time. It worked for about a week, then the time stopped holding. It now sometimes sets the clock backwards as I use it, that is, it may read 10 AM and an hour or so later it could read 9:30 AM - totally random. I have run complete malware and virus scans and all check out OK. Could I have a bad "new" battery? driver problem?

It is possible that I purchased a bad cmos battery. I bought it on eBay. Would be willing to buy another one to see if it fixes the clock. Is there a good source for this part? I can't find one on the dell website/

So far it is helpful, although until I get the comptuer fixed I won't know for sure. it is taking me in a direction, and that is a good start.

I fixed it. I had purchased a "clone" main 9 cell battery (NOT the CMOS Battery) and it apparently does something to the CMOS battery or clock. I removed the clone 9-cell, removed the CMOS battery and waited about 5 minutes and reconnected the CMOS Battery. On boot up it went through the full system check (all OK) and I had to reset the clock from the Setup Screen. I installed the original DELL 5 cell battery and the clock works perfectly.

This problem has come up often in the forums, and most of the answers have been about mother boards and reinstalling drivers. I had changed out tghe CMOS clock twice, so I know that was not the problem. had seen one opther person who did the full system reset like I did and it worked, so thought I would give it a try. Glad to have my clock back!

I have encounter same problem as you before with my computer and this problem now that you have even with a new CMOS battery is definitely a big chance that you have purchased a bad CMOS battery that you replace the old one. So what you can here is to go get a new COS battery from a computer store near you since the replacement CMSO battery work for about a week then suddenly having problem again. There's a small chance that this is a BIOS software problem, so after you replace again the CMOS battery and still have same problem a BIOS update will be the next step to do.

Thanks for this suggestion. I will get another cmos battery and give it a try. I can understand how a bad battery will allow the clock to run slow, but why would it set backwards? I mean, it can go from 10 AM to 9 AM sometimes. This appears to be a resetting of the clock, not just a slowing down.

    Will try new battery.

There is an internal battery for CMOS. Looks like small watch battery. The size of a nickle. This is the one that hold and keeps the clock and other settings.
This one has a plastic housing. Should be easy.Very nice manual. https://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins700m/en/SM/rsrvbatt.htm#wp1084976

Assuming you don't have a virus, the laptop's internal (CMOS) battery may be bad. Apart from keeping the time current, it holds onto your machines bootlog. If the machine starts up in Safe Mode, it would likely be the CMOS battery that's bad.

I dont think it is a cmos issue because i replaced the cmos battery and it did not help my clock. I also had dell fix the motherboard and it worked for bout 7 months unfortunately after my warranty was up. Til this day my clock last no longer then a few hours until it reverts back to the time i changed it to.

I have a Dell XPS m1330 and the date and time keeps changing every now and then. I have changed the CMOS battery twice and problem still persists.

While you changed if the battery volltage had dropped down we must consider a problme in the bios section of the motherboard.
Make sure that the battery used is of good quality and not kept on shelf for long period.
Clean the contacts of the battery and try again, if not the mother board must be checked

This could mean two things: a problem with the cmos battery or the motherboard itself. Try to remove the cmos battery first and install. If not, then replace the cmos battery.

Some time ago, after installing Windows 7, my Dell 1525 started changing internal clock as it wants: yesterday there was 2010, today is 2021... But it wouldn't be a serious problem if the laptop worked...

Go to http://support.dell.com and download the latest BIOS update for your system.

Please remember NOT to power down your system when flashing the BIOS.

Reset your system time inside windows and see if system time won't change by it's own. If time is stable, then you fixed it. If system time changed again, the you have to other choice but to replace the CMOS battery.

How to cmos clear of dell model m1330

There are two ways you can restore the CMOS/BIOS back to the factory default.
First, turn off the laptop and remove the BIOS battery for 15 mins.
Insert the BIOS battery back again and go into the BIOS configuration to set the Date and Time etc.
Second, go into the BIOS configuration press the f1 or F2 or F10 key (not sure which key for your model DELL). When you get into the BIOS then there is a setting to restore the BIOS to the default, then save setting and exit.

Clock not keeping correct time

The CMOS battery keeps the laptop configuration stored in the CMOS chip and the main battery has no effect on the CMOS.
If the date and time drift off, it indicates the CMOS battery is nearly flat and needs to be replaced.
If you had ticked the Daylight saving box in the Time Zone tab in Control Panel - Date and Time setting then the time would automatically adjust for Daylight saving.

if the clock is consistently being resetted then most likely you have a failing cmos battery. you need to dismantle the laptop in order to have access to the cmos battery. you need to fina a COIN type battery.
