I've tried everones suggestion but can't seem to get it to work.  When I get to step 11 I can't find just the driver.  Vista runs the executable setup file.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I just found this solution TODAY! After trying for a whole year to fix this thing... It was right at my face the whole time!!!!

1) Uninstall your old Canon MF5550 driver.
2) Reboot your computer
3) Download the Canon MF5550 driver Windows XP version.
4) Open your Vista Control Panel, then click on PROGRAMS (not on Uninstall or something else...)
5) bellow "Programs & Features", click on "use an older program with this version of Windows". Follow the wizard.
6) Locate the program manually. (If you need to search the folder where you downloaded your Canon driver, just go to search file on C. It will probably download on your desktop or Downloads)
7) Open the MF5550 Folder where you downloaded the driver, and click on the setup.exe file.
8) Choose on the next screen Windows XP
9) If you need to change the display settings, go ahead. But I didn't change anything. I just clicked NEXT.
10) Fill in the box: RUN THIS PROGRAM AS AN ADMINISTRATOR and click NEXT.
11) Click Next again and let Windows Vista do its job.
12) If it worked... just click yes and finish. If it didn't, click NO and run it again.

I AM SO HAPPY THIS THING WORKED!!!

Let me know if this worked for you!!!! I know I've looked everywhere for this solution...

email me at music2harvest@msn.com

GOOD LUCK! GOD BLESS!

I made several attempts that failed. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver each time. After step 11, prior to testing the program to see whether it works, plug in your printer USB to your Vista computer. You will see the window detecting new hardware, then follow the instructions to install the new driver.

It still took me a couple tries, but finally got to the screen to search the computer for the driver and Vista found the MF5550 driver. I clicked install, and the rest is history!

It works like a charm.

the problem that people are having is if they have a 64 bit version of vista. you can get away with using the vista 32 bit version, but not the 64. that is the key. if you have a 64 bit version, you're just wasting your time trying to get this printer to work.

Thanks so much. Worked for my Canon MF5750 as well.

In fact, I took it a step further. New Vista drivers could not be installed as Vista stated "older MF drivers are installed and need to be removed" before proceeding. The installation disc was for XP and would not install. For the life of me, I could not find the drivers anywhere and even ran a driver removal program without solution. I followed your instructions to get the old XP drivers reinstalled and then fromally uninstalled them and put on the new Vista supported drivers supplied through Canon's drivers and downloads page. Worked like a charm. Thanks again!

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
I kept going back to using XP, as the printer cost me more then the operating system. Also I refuse to buy anymore Canon products as they wouldn't provide any support. I looked for a fix for maybe 3 years and I finally found this.

One thing I did different was on step 6 - following the wizard it allowed me to install the program from the cd.

    Thank You!!!

Driver Canon mf5550

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/imageclass_series/imageclass_mf5550

This is all they got.
If they don't have the driver for windows 7, you will be stuck with the possibility of trying my suggestion for installing.

On Windows 7, go to Control Panel then Click on Programs.
Below Program & Features, you will see "RUN PROGRAMS MADE FOR A PREVIOUS VERSION OF WINDOWS"

A new window will open up called PROGRAM COMPATIBILITY.
Follow the instructions, and add a driver for the previous version.

If it works, then you are all set.

If it does not, then you are better off getting another printer.

Eventually, I had to sadly get rid of this printer. It was a great and wonderful printer, and I was sad to see it go because of driver compatibility issues since I got another brand new computer that does not work with it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: 64bit versions are even harder to make it work with this printer.

Hope it helps! Good luck.

Cannot install drivers for Canon MF5550 on Windows 7 64 bit O.S.

Incompatible types and version of printer drivers when installed in Windows 7 can cause issues which might hinder the installation process thereby causing the installed drivers to become corrupt. The users of Windows 7 are therefore advised to verify the version and type of printer drivers before the installation and install only those drivers that are fully compatible with the Windows OS on the system to avoid these kinds of issues.

Drivers for your printer and operating system can be found here along with Guides and Manuals:

Uninstall your old driver; download the new driver for your OS and install.

I have a canon MF5550 printer that I am trying to use with Windows Vista. There is no compatible printer that I can find. What is recommended?

Canon isn't supporting this printer for Vista. You can try using the driver for XP. Available here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/imageclass_series/imageclass_mf5550?selectedName=DriversAndSoftware#DriversAndSoftware
You may need to use the Compatibility Mode on the installer as well as the driver. (Right click on the .exe and select Properties. Then go to the Compatibility Tab and check the box for the Run this program in Compatibility Mode and choose XP in the adjacent drop down.) Then right click again on the .exe and choose Run as Administrator to make sure the UAC allows the installer to work.

I hope this helps.

(a generic printer driver may install when you plug in the printer without installing the software first. If this happened you should uninstall that driver before trying the Canon version. If the Canon driver doesn't work, the generic printer driver in Vista will probably let you print but you may lose the scanner features. Please note that the buttons may or may not work to launch the software on the computer. Try opening the software and initiating scans from the computer.)

How can windows xp install this printer in

probably not ... go to www.canon.com/support and get the driver you need to install this device on your computer, if it is supported under XP.

It is XP compatable, RIGHT? Check the microsoft compatability list for XP operating system.
