Question about Hitachi VMH710A Hi-8 Analog Camcorder

Hitachi camcorder will not turn on

I have a Hitachi VMH710A Hi-8 camcorder that will not turn on.
I have tried powering it with the 6 volt power adaptor and with AA batteries.
There is absolutely no response from any part of the camera.
I have tried moving the switch back and forth between "video" and "cam", but nothing happens. The door also does not open when i move the eject switch, which should open the tape compartment.
Any ideas are welcome!

The previous advice did not help that much as the service manual is full of schematics, but not many helpful hints to get this camera working.
The power supply is not shutting down as suggested. Instaed, nothing is happening at all when power is supplied.

Hi,
First of all if your still using Hi-8, I would spend the couple hundred dollars and move up to MINI-DV. Analog recording is ancient and not nearly up to current standards in mine and almost any videographer's opinion. NOw as for it not powering up. As far as i know this uses a "proprietary" battery. So if your battery is old that may be why it's not turning on anymore. These batteries run around 40$. I would not invest that kind of money into this camera. You would be much better served upgrading to today's standards. If you have any questions please let me know.
Thank you,
Lee

Thanks for your response. I agree that I do not want to spend the money on a new battery for this old format camera.

I only want to get this old unit running to play my recored family videos on Hi-8 tapes so I can copy them onto DVDs at home.

I would purchase a new unit for any fuure recording.

This particular video unit has a power adaptor which seems to be working OK, but when I connect the power adaptor to to the camera it still does not run.

This video camera can also be powered with AA batteries in place of the original Nicad. I have installed brand new AA batteries as well, but again camera will not power up.

    Any more ideas?

Please find above your service and repair manual. Please follow the troubleshooting procedures and you should be able to isolate and hopefully work towards a repair. With these very sophisticated and delicate units, home repair is really not an option, unless it is something very rudimentary. My professional advice, is to contact a local or head office, of Hitachi, in your case, and ask them for a referral to an authorised service center. Then, ask, them, for a "Quote" for the repair. This way you can make an informed decision, as to repair or replace. You see these days, often, we find that a repair can sometimes equal or exceed the cost of a new unit. Plus the new unit will have a warranty.
A problem such as this is usually a Power Supply problem, that may or may bot be caused by some other component "Breaking Down" and causing the Power Supply, to shut down, for safety reasons. and to avoid possible further damage.

Is there a way to connect the hitachi vmh710a camcorder to the computer?

Well yes... If you have a Card or USB Video IN Dongle, that will accept Video IN, then you can connect up your camera, to this Via the Composite Video OUT & Audio OUT on the camera, and hook up to the Composite Video IN and Audio IN, to the Computer. Then you can use the software that came with your card or Dongle, or in fact any software that handles Video IN and then you can do as you want.

Sharp Camcorder VL-NZ100E battery doesn't seem to charge

2.7 volts is too low. Usually camcorders use battery at least 6 volts. Problems with rechargeables especially NiCds and NiMH, a cell will be shorted. for 6 volts pack, there are 5 cells in series (5 pcs x 1.2 volts with load , 1.35 no load). If you are measuring only 2.7 volts, it is highly possible that 3 cells are dead. As for the charger, if the same charger is used to power the camcorder and you said the the camcorder operates using the adaptor, this means that the charger is OK. You can ZAP the battery back to life but I will not recommend. It can be dangerous. If you can buy the battery, I suggest you do it since the old battery, even when zapped, will not provide enough juice anymore.
