I've tried every fix offered and none has worked. I'm wondering if I should give up and and try an external audio device.

You should be able to find the appropriate sound drivers for your ASUS motherboard here.

Try going into device manager, selecting the Realtek AC97 audio device
(or whatever it is), go to Driver, and go "Roll Back Driver."

Microsoft's Windows Update is now trying to update every AC97 audio it
sees to a CMedia AC97 device, which often is NOT the right driver.

    Which drivers did you install.
Do not install the xp one.You should only install the sound drivers which are compatible with vista.

    You can also do this:

Right click on "My Computer" icon and select properties.
Now click on Device manager and then double click on "Sound,Video and Controllers" you will then see another name of the sound driver just double click on that. Now go to the "Drivers Tab" and select update drivers.

How to fix error code. STOP: 0x0000C1F5

This issue occurs because the Common Log File System (Clfs.sys) driver does not fix the $TxfLog file when the file is corrupted. In addition to the Stop error message, Windows Vista may not start during startup until the offending disk is removed from the computer.
Support for Windows Vista without any service packs installed ended on April 13, 2010. To continue receiving security updates for Windows, make sure you're running Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 (SP2).
To fix this allow Microsoft Windows to update you to the latest service pack.

If this answers your question, I'd appreciate 4 thumbs. I do this for fun and do not get paid.

I don't think the program is compatible with Vista. Were you running Vista when it worked a year ago ?

Windows Explorer sends continuously error messages

Turning off thumbnails will probably stop you getting that error

DO:
Open Control Panel > Folder Options > Always show Icons, Never Thumbnails

However, this isn't actually fixing the problem.

Do you have Nero installed by any chance?

If so try:
Open Computer > System Drive > Program files > Common Files > Ahead > DSfilter.
Rename "NeroVideoProc.ax" to "1NeroVideoProc.ax"
Also rename "NeVideo.ax" to "1NeVideo.ax"

And then reboot.

    Windows vista activation

Yes, and you're definitely acting too thick to be trusted with a computer. For example, if you'd recorded error messages with more exactness, and attribution of errors to a particular context (say, a Windows Vista bluescreen or a particularly titled message-box;) then I might be assured that you could suffer people well to help you accomplish ambitions and fly through the checkpoints and tribulations. This is not yet the case.

Give some context as to what was working and when it stopped, what reproducible signs of malfunction and diagnostics arise, and in the case of Vista activation on spare HDs, RTFMYGDSOBOMGROFLMAO. Vista's acting normal. Try installing another OS for the practice and diversity. Most glaringly, you need to form complete sentences, with clear attribution of what says what when it says it.
