Unless you want to try and find another screen that may have a broken backlight tube so that you can disassemble the screen and recycle the outside pane along with the electronics, then you could go that route. I have disassembled my share of these lcd panels and they are not only difficult to work with but the components are fragile to begin with, the lcd panel is made up of 5 different panels of glass and plastic and have to be placed in the framework in the proper order as well as the electronic board and backlight tube. It is more financialy feasable to simply replace the entire lcd panel. If the laptop was dropped and the panel cracked...there could be other damage that is not apparent but may crop up later, so in that respect it is better off and easier to replace the panel as a whole. I would also replace the lcd inverter while you have it apart....on ebay the lcd panels can be as inexpensive as $75.00 and the inverters are around $15.00. The link below is to the service manual that goes through the steps in performing the repair yourself.
The lcd removal procedure starts on 5.2
