If the light is indicating "no power", then it won't be recognized.

Borrow a "multimeter", and check that the power-supply for the external drive is putting-out the correct voltage/amperage.

Try disassembling the external drive, and connecting the disk-drive as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive itself is OK.

Disk drive lenovo computer not open

Is the 'D' drive the cd/dvd drive? If so, try cds or dvds of different types to see what works. Some cd units won't read a dvd. A little light should come on if the drive is trying to read. No light, drive is dead.

WD 1TB light is on but not blinking and can not be read

You can try to open the hard drive cabinet and to put the hard drive into another cabinet in order to see if the problem comes from the unit itself

Can`t read the dvd

Does it read CD-ROM's? Typically, if the DVDs you are attempting to read work in other devices and not your laptop, the drive itself may be dead if if cannot read any type of disc. Does the drive have a light on it and does it light up? If not, the drive may be dead.

Do you hear any noise after putting a disc in the drive? If not, the drive may be dead. Can you see the drive in "My Computer?" If not, once again it may indicate that the drive is dead (unless there is a software issue).

Depending on the model/age of the laptop, a replacement drive may be able to be found cheaply online. If you are familiar with electronics, taking it apart to swap it out might not be so bad. If you think it is dead and don't want to do it yourself, you can can a quote to fix it (but, depending on your laptop features, it might be more cost-efficient to buy a new one since they have come down so much this year).

Notebook wont start up

First--does the hard drive spin up and the fan start (you can hear that)--also, you will see the hard drive light flicker.
If so, I'd try an external monitor to see if the screen might be the problem.
If nothing starts--all you get is the power light, then you have a larger problem--most likely a motherboard.
You haven't lost your data--the data can usually be read by taking the hard drive out and attaching it to another computer and reading it (yes, they make adapters to enable you to read small hard drives (I use one at my business)

Laptop does not read WD400GB hard-drive.Tried every port, does not make noise, light is on, and it is about a month old! Can anyone help please???

Are you using the short usb cable that came with it? Will a desktop recognize the drive?
I had an issue with mine where the laptop would light the drive but it wouldn't show up. Used a 6" usb cable and problem solved.
A lot of laptops don't put out the required power for these to use a longer cable. But, a desktop will.

My dell d610 laptop cd/dvd drive not working

the drive has one lens, that works for both cd's and dvd's. when it reads a dvd it uses a higher light frequency, however when reading a cd it will use a lower light frequency. the lens is most likely dirty, which is why the high frequency light aka dvd is working but not the low frequency light aka cd. a specialized lens cleaning cd may be needed. or if you want to do it manually open the drive exposing the lens, then get a q-tip and some rubbing alchohol. dip the q-tip in the rubbing alchohol and rub the lens gently in a circlular motion. then turn the q-tip over to the dry side and do the same to dry it. thank you for using fixya!
