Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

GE Spacemaker microwave blower question. We just bought an over the range GE model #JVM1540DM3WW and the exhaust fan sounds like a jet plane when the microwave oven is cooking. I removed the blower because we just have it over the counter and don't need to protect it from heat. Now I'm wondering if the electronics are being cooled at all because I don't feel any air being expelled from the grill on top of the machine. Should I plug it back in and return the whole thing or do you have any suggestions?

Hi,
According to the manual this fan is needed for cooling of the microwave oven. So if it is too loud I would take it back and either replace it for a different one or a completely different model altogether. Hope you find this information helpful and good luck. If you need further assistance let me know.
Thank you,
Lee

GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Exhaust Fan Whines & Doesn't Do a Good Job

The vent fan assembly's blade assembly may be freewheeling on the motor shaft (which can be fixed with a couple of drops of super glue or epoxy) or there may be a foreign object or critter in the fan blades.

You will have to remove the oven from the wall to inspect and remove and inspect the vent motor. You can download the installation instructions here.

At my Web site, you can get details, plus I have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can order any needed GE parts from the Pros here, my favorite affiliated supplier.

Vent blower won't stop

I had the same problem with the fan not wanting to shut off after the repair. Once I set the clock though I was able to push the button to shut the fan off. So try setting your clock first and see if that helps.

Humming ge sapcesaver microwave

During operation, most of the built-in models have a panel that tilts out while the exhaust fan is on. When cooking is done, the exhaust fan shuts off and the panel retracts to its normal position. With the fan & microwave motor off, the hum is easier to hear. Look closely at the top panel the next time you hear the hum, and you'll probably see that it's retracting.

VENT NOT SUCKING

I would suggest checking the filters, checking the duct work (including the outdoor vent) and if that doesn't turn up the problem, the hood vent exhaust fan blade assembly may have come loose on the shaft.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here to help you verify the filter status and duct work.

New microwave; loud fan when heating items

Since you say it's new, it should be under warranty. I would call GE (see your owner's manual) to get a local authorized service center. Then while you're on the phone with the service center, you can start it up and hold the phone close to it to demonstrate to the technician how loud it is. They should be able to tell you if it will be covered under warranty so you get it fixed free.
