Question about Heating & Cooling
Hi, This is a common issue which is noticed with Window A/C over a period of time.To help in cooling the modern units hold water which the rear fan picks up to splash on the hot condensing coils. But that means that water can get stale over the winter and grow mold or algae. Some have a plug that can be removed and should have been removed over the winter to let it drain better. Now would be a good time to use a hose on the rear coils to clean them and that would also help clean out that rear pan. Spray some cleaner on the coils when washing. In theory window units are supposed to be removed in the winter and stored but many people leave them in. But leaving them in, particularly without a cover over them can let them get smelly. If you?ve noticed a musty smell coming from your window air conditioner it?s probably because of dust, dirt, and moisture causing mold and mildew to form in the drip tray. Remove the drip tray from beneath the unit, and wash it in warm soapy water. Remember to clean the drip tray at least once a year to avoid future problems with dirt, dust, and excess moisture that can create odor-causing bacteria." http://www.howtogetridofstuff.com/odor-removal/how-to-eliminate-air-conditioner-odor/
