Question about Hitachi 42EDT41 42 in. HD-Ready Plasma Television

7 Answers

42EDT41 Plasma I have a hitachi plasma with a 1 inch vertical black line going down the middle of the screen. I saw your responce on what it could be. I took my plasma to repair and was told the cost was 520.00. The cause of the black line was that the driver buffer in the IC board was bad, and that the board needed to be replaced... Is 520.00 a reasonable price? thanks, Gabriel

THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS A MANUFACTOR PROBLEM AND WE SHOULD MAKE THEM DO A RECALL ON THE TELEVISION. WE PAID TOO MUCH TO HAVE THIS KIND OF A PROBLEM.

I have a vertical approx. 1 in. black line running vertically down the middle of the screen. The TV will be 4 years old in Sept. 2008. This TV has lasted the shortest time of any I have purchased in 40 years. I guess this is a sign of things to come with these TV's. I am going to check to have it serviced, but it sounds like I'm in for at least $500.

same exact problem, and our tv is almost 4 years old. We did purchase an extended 3 year warranty for about $500 but of course it has expired.

Guys I too had the same problem, check out AVforums. I fixed this with the price of a fine tip solder.
I resoldered the resistors in the bottom ribbon cable that drives that section of the board.

Recalls on T.V.'s? Your kidding Right? I'm a T.V. tech for over 20 years now, and people did themselves in and don't even realize it. Buying the cheapest sets from Highland Appliance,Ollie Fretter and now Best Buy and Circuit City is why all you can get now is junk. You can't imagine how many off-brand sets people bring in and can't understand why parts aren't available or it only lasted 5 years. The consumer demanded cheap sets and the good manufacturers had to follow suit and lower the quaility in order to compete. If you can buy a Hitachi 42" for $2300 or an Insignia for $900, 95% will go for the cheap set. That's why nothing lasts anymore. Don't blame Hitachi.......

This is a very easy fix for a T.V. tech or shop. There are small surface mount resistors on the ribbon cable that attach from the r-adr and l-adr panel boards to the plasma panel itself. On the bottom of set, under the metal rectangle pieces screwed down with 2 screws each are the ribbon cables. The driver chips are glued on the ribbon cable and the resistors are coupling the signal....like little jumpers. You just have to be VERY careful when resoldering because you can destroy the ribbon cable and then would need a new display. Only attempt if you are comforable with very fine soldering. You need a pencil tip iron with very low heat. Try and get low temp solder as well. Once you see the ribbon cable on the bottom of the set, you'll see the little surface resistors there too. You should resolder each ribbon, but you could just go to the section the line is at and do those. I would think $150.00 would be a far price to pay to have it done by a shop. 1 hour labor MAX. CALL around. I hate to say it, but there are alot of BAD shops out there. Do your homework when selecting a repair shop...PLEASE!!!

520.00!? Sounds like he's going to replace the entire plasma module-the buffer chips can't be replaced individually. Tell him to resolder the chip resistors on the COF boards before you fork out that kind of cash. This model's notorious for cold solder...

There are two boards at the bottom of the set connected to the panel. Follow the black line to the boards(it will be inline with one or the other) either that board is bad or the panel itself is bad . The boards do not meet exactly in the middle.

Black line in the middle of screen

It is possible the connector to from the address board to the screen may be need to be cleaned & re-seated, but almost 99% of the time this fault is a problem within the plasma screen & the only solution is for a replacement screen.

The Y sustain board is not your problem because you have a picture. The problem is most likely the controller board and or the XR or XL board. It would be helpful for us if you post a photo of the symptom. Good luck
