My lap top keeps shutting off

Overheating When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermal overload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is the problem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are clogged with dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

I won't shut down my laptop

Why is it exactly that you wont shut off your lap top...? I've actually hear that leaving you lap top on constantly is ok for the unit. I myself constantly leave my lap top on all the time and have had no issues with it. Hope this helps Shannon

My problem started out pretty confusing. One day I turned my lap top on and the screen, after about five to ten seconds of being on, went black. I could see things loading up sort of but the screen was too...

Darkened screen as you describe indicates a failing inverter. You can test this easily by plugging the laptop into an external monitor, if this works ok, then the inverter needs replaced, If it does not work, the problem is with the graphics chip / motherboard

TROUBLE SHOOT BLACK SCREEN

Is the screen black on a lap top or a PC it helps to know which. If a black screen is on a lap top it could be the lamp went out does the computer go through a boot process is also a question? If PC check cables take the monitor to another computer and if it works most likely it is a video card gone bad. There are several things to go through first is to make sure you post more information about what I have described above you will get better answers if I had more information just a suggestion. John

Computer won't start

When the screen is black, try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del; a soft reset should kick it back into gear. Did the laptop shut down unexpectedly due to power loss/overheating/etc..?
