Hello: i purchased an old (15+ years old) sub zero 351 and it has been working great until a few weeks ago it started occasionally making a small noise. now, it makes a horrible loud noise that lasts about 20 seconds and occurs about every 2-3 hours. it sounds like a buzzer alarm going off -- a very harsh, hard scary sound. it almost sounds more like it is coming from under the unit than above it, but i really can't tell. the fridge and freezer both are still cold. any ideas? thanks for the help! --marie

Re: sub zero making a horrible noise
If it is coming from under your unit is it most likely the water inlet valve for the icemaker check that and let me know you will have to remve the 2 screw on the kick plate to get to it,it should be on the left side

what a **** way to make money.
why can't you people just help people, instead of making it sound like you really wanna help, when all you really want is to make a buck.
maybe i'd believe in your little program (sort of like a prob-specific online "Car Talk"), if I had some testimonials.
Otherwise, find a better idea, guys.
First do the simple things like cleaning the condensor coils and turning the defrost timer a few times, also check the evaporator motor or just listen to the fan by opening the freezer door. Also check the light switch, make sure it turns the light off every time you close the door.
if you have ice buildup then the fridge may be low on freon. or there is dust clogging around the pump or fan is not running. remove the bottom or back and look around the compressor. see that the fan is running.
I had a whirlpool fridge that did the exact same thing. Sometimes it was loud enough to wake me up at night! It is the compressor shutting down. I had it for several years untill I purchased a larger one, and then gave it to a girlfriend at least a year ago. Its still working good today. So if you can tollerate it, just live with it. Otherwise change the compressor.
