Sub zero making a horrible noise

Hello: i purchased an old (15+ years old) sub zero 351 and it has been working great until a few weeks ago it started occasionally making a small noise. now, it makes a horrible loud noise that lasts about 20 seconds and occurs about every 2-3 hours. it sounds like a buzzer alarm going off -- a very harsh, hard scary sound. it almost sounds more like it is coming from under the unit than above it, but i really can't tell. the fridge and freezer both are still cold. any ideas? thanks for the help! --marie

I am having almost the same problem. However the fan is making noise. I removed the fan to clean from all the black gunk it had on it. I also used some WD40 to lubricate. My Sub Zero is about 10-15 years old. I need to know if might be the motor or the fan.

If it is coming from under your unit is it most likely the water inlet valve for the icemaker check that and let me know you will have to remve the 2 screw on the kick plate to get to it,it should be on the left side

The most likely failure (after a power outage) is your start capacitor or start relay. I would check them closely.

My sub-zero fridge is about 20 years old. About a week ago, as it got hotter here in New Orleans, the beer bottles were sweating and not cold enough. So I adjusted the knob, and the next day everythin

what a **** way to make money. why can't you people just help people, instead of making it sound like you really wanna help, when all you really want is to make a buck. maybe i'd believe in your little program (sort of like a prob-specific online "Car Talk"), if I had some testimonials. Otherwise, find a better idea, guys.

Sub-Zero 532 (About 18 years old)

First do the simple things like cleaning the condensor coils and turning the defrost timer a few times, also check the evaporator motor or just listen to the fan by opening the freezer door. Also check the light switch, make sure it turns the light off every time you close the door.

Loud humming noise as fridge is running

if you have ice buildup then the fridge may be low on freon.
or there is dust clogging around the pump or fan is not running.
remove the bottom or back and look around the compressor.
see that the fan is running.

Sub zero 650 fidge holding at 53 degrees

That depends on if your model has a five or ten year warranty on the compressor. Your problem may not be warranty related. Check and see if the condenser is clean, check for a frozen cooling coil.

you could try taking the fan assembly out and adjusting it or oiling it, sometimes it gets that back pressure when the door is closed because it has to work harder

Whirlpoor Refridgerator 10-12 yrs old

I had a whirlpool fridge that did the exact same thing. Sometimes it was loud enough to wake me up at night! It is the compressor shutting down. I had it for several years untill I purchased a larger one, and then gave it to a girlfriend at least a year ago. Its still working good today. So if you can tollerate it, just live with it. Otherwise change the compressor.

WHATS THAT NOISE??!!

more likely a bad compressor, which is more sensitive to temperature extremes...may be cheaper to replace the frig.
