Yes, no problem.

In Auto and Manual Modes, not TTL.

Can you use a vivitar 285 flash with a nikon D90 , if so do they still sell the cord that connects to the camera for off camera flash??

You can use the 285 with the D90, just don't do it without something isolating the two to prevent the trigger voltage from frying the D90. You can use something like the Wein Safe Sync
( http://www.weinproducts.com/safesyncs.htm ) for this.

As for an off-camera cord, you can use something like the Nikon
SC-29 ( http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikonusa/en_US/pd/productID.213505500 )

Does the TR-2000 work with a vivitar 285? What cable do I need to buy?

TR 2000 gives two output ^ volt and 330 volts.
Whereas 285 HV uses 6 volt and 110 volt AC
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=details_accessories&A=kitInfo&Q=&sku=638035&is=REG
I am running my 285HV with external 6volt battery pack.sort of this type.

I added 2 standard diodes in series (IN4001 type) and placed inside the dummy battery pack which reduces some voltage and safeguards against wrong polarity.

285, red/green lights blink, whines on start up, but won't fire

Hi Dave,
Try shorting out Center Pin to Outside Metal Contact after the light turned green. This must fire the flash.
If not, could be the flashtube /or trigger are defective.
Do you have a DVM?

It is the HV version, yes you can just put it in a color mode so the sensor on the front guesses the out put- it isn't ttl so it won't know what the camera is thinking

Can I use my Vivitar 385 with my Pentax K200?

Yes, you can use the flash if your camera has a PC connector.

Or, check the trigger voltage: under 7VDC = OK on hotshoe.

285 not 285HV

You can make your own or repair the shoe.
Use Weld Bond, buy from auto store.
Buy plastic, then cut & stack & Weld Bond.
