Question about HP Pavilion a1700n PC Desktop
About 2 months ago I put my HP a1700n away in storage because it was taking up to much room. It worked perfectly. I pulled it out the other day to set it up, and i plugged it into my surge protector and turned it on. It was showing power on the power supply, but the front on off button wasnt working. I took it to a tech and he put in a new 680 W power supply and said it still wasnt working. He tested the mother board and said it was fried. How does the mother board get toasted when I put it away and it was working and now it doesnt work? I tried to jump the on/off switch on the front and still nothing. How does one test a motherboard.
Sounds like when you removed it from storage and reconected the wires is it possible there was alittle moisture (condensation) built upon the motherboard and when you plugged it in and tried to power it up it fried. When electronics are stored somewhere not at or close to normal room temps when reintroduced into a normal room temp enviroment moisture can condense and accumulate. enough to cause a short and thats all she wrote. All you needed to do is let it acclimate for a while depending on the storage temps to normal room temp difference. The bigger the difference the longer wait, the lower the difference the less time needed to wait. You can even submerge the whole pc and as long as you get as much of the water out of it as possible then let dry at room temp thoroughly and completely ( i can't stress that enough). You can even use a hair dryer to help in getting the moisture out (use on low at close range or high from 10 to 12 inches away from motherboard and other componants). You should be able to start it up with only very minor problems if any. Again," COMPLETELY DRY" if you have to wait 2-3 weeks to be sure then wait! Better safe than sorry! Hope this helps someone. Good Luck!

May be a fault on the connection with the surge. Connector leakage might be. And of course the power unit it might be. One or both as I feel made the trouble. There are various methods to test mother boards. Most simple method is to check each and every component on the board using a separate motherboard or using component testers.
