Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Intek V - Twin Vertical Ohv Engine with Electric Start 22 Hp, 1" X 3 5/32" Shaft, ModelNo. 44K777 - 0027 - E1

After my Timecutter 1642 z sit for a day or so it will not start. I just had a new starter put in and it started right away so I put it away. 5 days latter I went to start it and the engine will only partially turn over. It either spins a quarter turn and stops like it is stuck or can't overcome the compression or the starter gives a loud click and may or may not give a high pitched whine sound like eeeeeeeee. When I walk away and come back periodically it may or may not start. When I do get it to start it unexpectantly starts turning over normally and I do get it started. Help!

If you know the battery is fully charged and good and the battery cables are tight and you have a clean connection then I would suspect the starter is not seated properly or it is defective even if it is new. Check to make sure the starter is fully seated and not cocked slightly or one side is not fully seated and tight. If the battery is over 2 years old, it is very suspect. Check all the electrical connections at the starter and the battery. It has to be either the starter, the battery, or the connections.

Ray this is not the solution. I have been checking the internet and found that the most probable solution is most likely that I need to do a valve adjustment. The symptoms are identical to mine. I need a thorough discussion on how to do a valve adjustment on a Briggs & Stratton 16HP Model: 286H77 Type: 0265-E1 engine.

    Thanks,

    Todd

I am having the same problem. did you figure out what was wrong with yours. I have tested all of the wires in the harness under the dash, they r fine. I pulled off the starter and had it tested; O'rilies said it was fine. It is a 5 speed, and I can push start the car just fine any time. Like yours, some days my car starts, some days it doesn't. The days it starts, it runs fine with no problems starting or running. the problem is the days that it wont start.

I have a new battery. i have changed the fuel

I'm guessing you checked the fuses already, so if you have spark at the plugs, look for a vacuum leak. If you still suspect the fuel pump, do a fuel pressure test.

Starter issues

try tapping on the starter motor/solenoid, it sounds like the solenoind is engaging(the clunk you hear) but the starter is not turning if the wire is getting hot it could be the starter is frozen up.

I suspect a weak battery, but how do I know it's not a bad ALT?

when your car is running disconnect the positive cord from the battery. if the car stays on, than it is your alternator, if not its your battery. also if the car stays on, the head lights go dim if the alternator is malfunctioning
