My external hard drive is not being seen by my computer?

go into the bios on start up (alt+control+ delete) buttons all down together
find the boot section and turn on boot from cd
allow all cd units and it will find a cd ( external hard drive ) and boot up
take it to a computer shop and have them set it up
or

If your computer is working and you want an external hard drive to save to-- open the computer and with the external hard drive switched off, plug in the usb cables. turn on the hard drive and the computer will recognize it as a plug in unit and search for the correct driver
it may ask for a disc for installation or search on line ( use the disc in the cd drive in the computer)
from there the wizard will install the external hard drive

Follow these steps:
1. right click on My Computer
2.Click on manage
3.Click Disc Management
There you can see External hd (you can chose to activate or change drive letters and that will do the job)

Have you seen a hard disk inside your computer? That is exactly what is inside in an external drive.

You mentioned that you dropped the external drive once, and that could be the reason why your computer was unable to recognized it as external drive.

Danielle! The connectors of the hard disk inside the Samsung External Drive (or other term is hard disk enclosure) might be loosened.

If you can open the enclosure and expose the two connectors, disconnect them and reseat properly.

That might fix it!

May seem like a silly question you are not booting up computer with ext drive still plugged in are you?
i am assuming your operating system is on the internal drive.
if so don't have the external plugged in when you start up.

If your drive is in good condition, you will be able to make a new partition ,if it is not seen in my computer, you will have to go to control panel,find administrative tools icon,click on it,click on storage, and drive should be seen here.Place mouse pointer on drive hash mark. Right click on mouse you will give you option to create partition also to format drive.

It is nearly impossible to boot from external hard drive.  The main reason it that typically the computer need to have the OS loaded in order to support the external HD on the usb system.  My recommendation would be to return the external, purchase and internal and have a professional migrate your drive to the new one.

control panel, computer management, storage section, disk management. you may have to download the administrative tools for windows xp/2000/vista to find this. if you have multiple memory card readers, the drive letter assignments to these drives are conflicting with the drive letter that is being assigned to your external hard drive. assign the partition of your hard drive a letter not used down in the alphabet (such as x:) for e*X*ternal.

There is a chance that the hard drive itself is at fault and the computer cannot recognize it try using it as a slave drive in computer. and use a recovery cd from boot to check it out
You could use thee ultimate boot cd (download) to check it

If its an usb drive, no driver is required. The drive will show itself in My Computer after it is commected. Uninstall the driver, shut down, connect the device to the computer and start the computer.Tell me if it works. Also, when posting a question, give full details.
