Take them both out and reboot, you should get a beeping sound which is basically telling you it has no ram.
Then put 1 stick back in, and reboot. If it doesn't boot, take it back out and replace it with the other stick. If it still doesn't boot, try an original stick of ram if you still have them.
you could either have faulty ram or ram that is not compatible with your travelmate.

the specs i read says 8 gig is the max. here is what it says for RAM RAM
Installed Size4.0 GB / 8.0 GB (max)
TechnologyDDR2 SDRAM
Memory Speed667.0 MHz
Form FactorDIMM 240-pin
FeaturesDual channel memory architecture
Configuration Features2 x 2 GB
check to make sure you have added the right type of memory. also look at your user manual. it should tell you where and how to place the added sticks. sometimes they have to be added in pairs or have to be in specific slots. also if you dont have the manual it is on the gateway site. you should type in your model and serial number and get all the info you need.
Once you installed the memory, did you enter into the System BIOS Setup screen? Do this and verify that the system recognizes the newly installed 2GB RAM. This should let the system access the new memory once you boot.
Here are the specifications of the Gateway 838GM:
You will have to replace the existing memory with thesesettings only:
The machine comes with: 512 MB = 256 MB (removable) + 256 MB
PC3200DDR SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR
Nowyou can only upgrade to 4.0 Gig total.
I would recommend going to this link and order the correct memory foryour computer I use them quite a bit.

If the specs read that you can operate with 4GB of RAM, then I believe the AMD690g chipset is not the culprit.
The RAM that you're adding may be defective, or incompatible with the existing RAM.
Another possibility could be a bad RAM socket.
I also doubt you would get a black screen due to adding more RAM than the system is capable of handling, it would still start, but would not utilize the additional RAM.
Black screen usually means bad RAM or incompatible RAM or bad socket
Seems the memory is not comatable with the motherboard. Replace the old memory and visit http://www.crucial.com, they have a scanner tool which will confirm what mem can be installed.
Does it boot fine if you remove the memory you just added? If it does then try switching the memory that was in it before with the memory you just added. You want to first determine if the ram you bought is bad or incompatible.
i had same problem with mine, i have the acer aspire ast180-ud360a, dont put the same memory next to each other, u have to stagger it, so it looks like
