It sound like your power settings are turning the screen off. Try the following:
Right click on a the desktop and select Properties and then Screensaver and then click on Power. You will see power settings that tell the computer whether or not to turn off different things at different times. You'll see "Turn off monitor" and a selection next to it. It probably says "after 20 minutes". Change the setting to whatever you want between 1 minute and 5 hours, or Never. Let me know how you did, please grade this.

Inspiron 1520-before finishes loading desktop screen goes black..

As it works ok in safe mode, I suggest you check that your graphics drivers are up to date.

You should be able to download the latest from the Dell website.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1525. When I power on the unit, the LCD shows the Dell startup screen, then a whinning noise and the screen goes black. Sometime shortly there after the Windows screen appears but...

This sounds more like a hardware issue. Now you say that the external display output is working fine. It could possibly be a problem with the lcd display itself shorting out. If there was a problem with the video hardware then I do not think you would be able to get the external display working either. The whinning noise could be coming from the lcd inverter.
