Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I am replacing a compressor on a Whirlpool refrigerator. The compressor is part number 8201557. I am looking to replace it with an Embraco compressor Part number ff11.5bkw. I need to know if this will work out. The whirlpool compressor is priced very high. I do not have a cross reference for Embraco compressors. Can you help me out? Thanks!!

Hello,

what you need to know from this point is that this two compressors are not compatible with them self base on the reference you have explain to me

what you need to do to fix up your refrigerator in other to carry out it function effectively is that you will have to get the same part number of the old compressor i.e (8201557) so as not to damage your refrigerator's comdenser and the capacitor

please note,
that replacing a whirlpool refrigerator compressor with part number (8201557) with Embraco compressor with part number (ff11.5bkw) will not work out because they are of different capacities

Good luck and thanks for using fixya.

Will the 8201555 compressor be an adequate replacement?

Hi,

According to the information from your model number given the compressor should be 8201557 but that changes to W1039990 this is a complete kit. But if your good at changing this you can use a FF8.5HBK compressor which will be about a third of the cost. I hope this helps. Good Luck

Amana abb2224dew repairman installed part # 8201786. This was to replace the compressor start up. Worked for a week, then same buzz click sequence occurs. Looked up part number. Part is for mostly...

The replacement compressor kit is #12002633 from Amana (Now Whirlpool).
In this kit are the following New model compressor, relay/capacitor, jumper and instructions.
Kenmore does not make appliances rather all of the other manufacturers produce for them.
That part number is for Whirlpool Start Relay/Capacitor and as long as the compressor is the right horsepower for the relay it makes no difference who made it. (Techumseh or Embraco)

The recall was for units that had embraco compressors. the relay would burn up and not start the comperssor. (hum and click) some amanas had tecumseh compressors. They would just scize up and not run (hum and click)No recall. remove the back cover and see what name is on your compressor. If its hot and trying to start, Embraco needs new relay, Tecumseh needs to be replaced with a embraco compressor.

Installing compressor

It is likely you received a service port necessary to remove and replace the refrigerant in the failed system. Add a photo? It should be capable of clamping around 1/4 or 5/16 copper tubing and then piercing through the tubing via a schrader valve in the 5/16 flare nipple. Needs to be capped with a metal cap when you complete the job. Be sure to neutralize if you have an acid burnout condition from the failed compressor... copper windings burning in the absence of oxigen with all that hydrogen rich coolant makes for very high H+ concentration (i.e. ACID). The pH is minus the log of the hydrogen ion concentration so that number will be low.

1) add the service port
2) using your service hose and a transfer pump, remove refrigerant
3) test for acid and neutralize as needed, replace filter dryer anyway
4) replace compressor with make-up oil as measured from the failed unit and any collected with the refrigerant... use new oil only
5) pressure test with dry nitrogen
6) vacuum and hold 26+ inches Hg, more in cold areas
7) charge refrigerant in by weight specified on label
8) allow to equalize before starting, do not start in extreme cold since liquid refrigerant could be in the lines
9) recycle contaminated or acidic refrigerant
10) test the charge using a superheat/subcool setup if the system is not performing satisfactorily

Whirlpool side-by-side melted relay.

Maytag (owned by Whirlpool since 2005) has issued a recall on the compressor relay due to fires. Whirlpool brands are not listed in the recall but it looks like they should be. The problem goes back to Jan 01 according to the Consumer Product Safety Comission.

They are oil cooler lines. Your unit does not have an oil cooler so leave the plugs in & don't mess with them. Trust me just put the same compressor in the same model today. Appliance tech 10 years.
