Manual for the discontinued SS5 appears following link:

Most the timers at local box store are cheap replica brands. I recommend higher quality, such as Honeywell single-pole heavy duty programmable (or dawn-dusk) timer shown following link: requires Neutral wire
http://waterheatertimer.org/Programmable.html#honeywell

If you need the 3-way or do not have Neutral wire, then battery-operated Intermatic is best choice. Choose either 1 or 5 year warranty:

The clock motor has gone bad.
There are no replacement clock motors.
To work around, buy cheap plug-in timer, set power pack to override and plug power pack into cheap timer.
Power packs have 5 year limited warranty.

My EJ351 programmable timer has work perfectly since 2004. A few days ago the red light just started to continuously flash. I turn it off to rest and regrogram but no luck, the indicator light still...

What is amazing is that you know the year of purchase, AND remember how to set the timer.

1) Try turning off circuit breaker and see if timer resets.
2) Buy cheap circuit analyzer and plug into outlet on same breaker and see if line is clean.
3) EJ351 has limited 1 year warranty.
I test timers: usually when in-wall timer goes bad, it needs to be replaced.
There are no repair parts.

Google search: Intermatic EJ351 timer
Amazon sells EJ351

Aplus supply sells Ej351 timer.

I buy timers from both these suppliers.

Also take advantage of fixya phone service.
For a price, expert speaks with you over phone while you work on timer or any do-it-yourself project.

How do I set it and can I use it indoors?

I see nothing in the manual that says 'outdoor use only' EXCEPT timer runs on photoelectric eye.
Timer turns ON automatically at dusk, so if timer is inside, and indoor lights are ON, then timer stays OFF.

To use timer outdoors.
Plug timer into wall.
Timer turns ON automaically at Dusk.
Rotate dial to set how long timer will stay ON.
Set timer to turn OFF 2 4 6 8 Hours after dusk
Set timer to turn off at dawn
Set timer to ON so lights are ON full time
Set timer to OFF so lights are off full time.

Light turns off in the morning, but does not automatically turn on in the evening

Battery-operated Intermatic timers can develop problems.

1) Battery may need to be replaced.
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html#EJ500

2) Troubleshoot guide on manual says to 'reset and reprogram' timer if problems occur.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-ej500c-manual.pdf

3) Timer comes with 1 year warranty and can just go bad.

There is also a way of setting it by simply turning the light on and off at the desired time. Can yu help?

Manual: http://www.intermatic.com/~/media/files/intermatic/products/instructions/timers/ej351c%20-%20english.ashx

The manual says:
"To automatically program, letting the switch
timer "record" your ON/OFF activities over a 24-hour period,
storing them as programmed settings:

Move the control lever to the OFF-CLEAR position for about
20 seconds. The red indicator light will go off and any previous
time settings will be cleared from memory.
Move the control lever to the ON position. The Red indicator
light will start flashing.
Press the dial as an ON/OFF switch to turn lights ON and OFF
at the ON and OFF times you desire for the first 24 hours.
At the end of the 24-hour period, the switch timer will be programmed
and the Red indicator light will stay ON, indicating
that the switch timer is in AUTOMATIC mode."
