Hi,

Is the external drive recognized by the system? To check this right click on My Computer and select Manage from the list. A Computer Management window will pop up. From that list select Disk Management and see if the drive is there, it maybe showing as unalocated in the list.

Please get back to me with the results.

Regards.

    Ok,

Check the cable to make sure its ok. If you have to take the enclosure apart to make sure nothing has worked loose.

Listen to the drive itself, listen to see if it spins up. Are there any strange noises coming from the drive for example clicking or any other noise.

Can you also please tell me what, if anything happend to the drive which has caused you to perform a data recovery. Was the drive dropped, knocked or has it just failed?

Another way to check the drive is to take it out of the enclosure and place it into a desktop computer as a slave to see if the drive can be picked up that way.

    I await your reply.

    Regards.

Before you proceed troubleshooting, make sure you hear faint sound from the Device after it is connected to the usb port. 1. Try it on another Pc, (this will let you know whether Bmmdu2 is the culprit or not ). 2. Change the Usb cable. 3. Change/interchange the Usb port 4. Try connecting something like pendrive or other usb devices on the same port to verify that it's working. In most cases this problem is with the usb if your Disk drive is working. You'll need to double-check the connection, slight loose connection can also lead to this failure. If you don't hear any sound or feel any movement from the disk drive, then it's not possible to recover the data from your site, your hope is less. As your last choice, if the data are very much important, you can go to the data recovery center to get your data recovered by them. They use some technique to at least bring back your disk alive and recover the data from the device. It's done with most care and at a 100% dust free environment. Good luck.

    Did all you suggested.
The drive works on another computer running Vista.(computer 2)
Same USB cable used to connect to other computer.
Files are on external hard drive and accessible on other computer.

Right now, on computer 1 (the one I'm having problems with) is trying to load a MTP device. How do I stop it and get computer 1 to recognize the external hard drive?

Please restart your computer and follow the steps below and let me know the result..

    1. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.

    2. In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window will appear.

    3. On this disk management window, you can see some drives including the portable drive. Right click on your portable drive and click change drive letter and paths.

    4. Now a assign a new drive letter which is not being used by any of your drives in My Computer.

    5. After assigning the new drive letter your portable drive will show up in my computer with other drives.

    Next also try this;

Check Device Manager to see whether the device displays under the USB section or the Other Devices section. To do this, follow the procedures below:
Right-click My Computer, and click Properties
Double-click the System icon, and then click the Device Manager tab.
Check for the device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers or under the Other Devices section.

If the device is found under Universal Serial Bus controllers or Other Devices, then remove/disable it
from Device Manager, disconnect the USB device, restart the computer, and reconnect/reinstall the it.
There are still more measures to be taken but please try these basics steps before we go complicated.
Once again good luck and awaiting your reply.

Followed your instructions. One correction: the device manager is under "hardware" not "system". There was no "system" under the properties.

Drive letter changed successfully to "F" from "E".

I disabled "unknown" device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Restarted computer and in my computer "F" shows up but it still asked to install a disc.

  • h_newmanpepa May 28, 2010

Some other information that may be helpful in solving this problem:

This computer had been used on a network and under "computer" it displays a network drive "Dell dimension (t) (P:)" and a "Nero Scout".

I am trying to use this as a standalone and load my data files from the backup drive.

I am sorry for the delayed response, I thought this problem was solved by another expert since it has been locked to someone else.
Well as you've just mentioned, that you can see network drives, that could also be a problem but only in rare cases. Disable the network drives and check as the last solution.
I hope you've done registry cleaning, system restore, uninstall recently added hardwares/softwares. If all these cannot fix, your only option is to set up another Windows installation (let's say Xp sp2 as dual boot) and try whether it's working with it or not. If so then the problem is with the operating system's registry files or other undefined issues, but if it still doesn't detect, then the problem is with the Usb port or maybe other hardware problems.
I hope this helps. Good luck once again and thank you for using FixYa.

Thank you for the correction, actually I was mixed up with something, so my point had gone to the Control Panel instead of System Properties. Thanks once again. I appreciate your attitude. Good luck.

My Beyond Micr 250GB external HHD is not showing up on my PC running windows 7 and I have 2-1TB SATA HHD installed.

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use asoftech data recovery program to recover lost files.

Hi there. Dont worry, your data will most certainly still be on the drive. What you need is a Data recovery software like Acronis - or any other free restore software. As log as the drive can be seen in the device manger, you should then be able to access the drive and all its data from within such an application. Export all you need to your computer, and then re-partition and re-format your External drive. This happens when the partition data table is lost - the operating system does then not recognize the file-types and does not see any partitions. But that does not mean there is no data on the drive. So whatever you do, dont format the drive just to get access - those files can be read and secured from most File Restore and Partition managment programs. I use Acronis, but its not free. Search Google for tons of free apps which are out there. Hope that helps! Cheers, Matt

Beyond Micro BMMDU2 250 GB external hard drive not working

It is highly unlikely that it will work. A circuit board from the same make and model hard drive would be a better choice, but I think a fire damaged hard drive would not work with a functioning circuit board. It depends upon how much heat the hard drive was subject to.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services. Depending upon how valuable your data is, I suggest you get a quote first.

Beyond micro mobile disk BMMDU2 is not recognized

The drive USB interface may be damaged; an external case is available form various vendors for about $20. The drive should pop out and into the new case. If still not recognized, then the ID track on the drive may be compromized - that can happen if the USB is unplugged while it is still writing to the drive. There is drive recovery software out there, like EASEUS that works quite well (they have a demo that you can try free) to see if that would work.

Be careful: Before your files are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the external in case the original files are overwritten.

Beyond micro external hd 250gb does not get reconigze by pc

It is possible that it is just not being automatically assigned a drive letter. Go to the control panel, then Administrative Tools, then double-click Computer Management. In the left side, click Disk Management. Does your drive show up here? If it does, but there is no drive letter, find the drive at the bottom, right click, and click "Change Drive letter and paths", and choose a letter that is not alread taken.

If your drive does not show up here, make sure it is being recognized by right clicking My Computer and clicking Properties>Hardware tab>Device Manager and under Disk Drives make sure your drive is there (keep in mind it may have a strange name, probably the model number of the hard drive itself).

Good luck!
