    thanx for your reply, have already done these but still did not work,I found a link on another site

    http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problem...

    this seems to have worked, but not sure whether this has changed anything else. I did a full scan after downloading this fix and norton then told me I needed to download a driver installer from gear software, why would I need this?

Here is the explanation and solution for the error code 41:

Code 41
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41) Recommended resolution

A driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This error occurs when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device.

If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device.

If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer version of the driver might be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

Good luck.

    When you say Norton I assume you men Norton Utilities? It is a good program which I have faith in and have used for many years. If it says you need to download the installer I would do this.

    It is possible that you need the installer to load the drivers for the DVD drive (though these are usually simple ATAPI devices and generally (not always) the Window drivers will suit the device. Note: I have an LG DVD in my computer which neeeded to install LG drivers from a disk to get it to run.

    I presume by "gear software" that you mean the DVD's manufacturer's software?. If not, then like yourself. I do not know why you should need to download the Installer.

    Do a Restore Point before installing the Installer just in case something is wrong here.

    After you have installed the Installer and run the driver install again, let me know if it works.

    Good luck.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Laptop Levono y530, device dvd rw optiarc AD-7580s I tried to uninstall & reinstall it, but...

Give this a whirl:
CD-Rom stops working. After checking device manager you find an exclamation mark on the drive. It doesn't mean the drive is dead. It could be an upperfilter or lowerfilter registry issue that is keeping you from accessing the cd drive.

This fix worked for my client:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip

Also, try this fix from microsoft.

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error code 31, code 32, code 19, code 39, or code 41.

Try this before replacing the drive and remember that you may have to reinstall some burning software.

Help cd drive not working

The error code 10 in the Device Manager indicates that the drivers of the DVD Drive are corrupted and needs to be repaired.

It may not show any effect if you simply uninstall the DVD Drive from the Device Manager and restart the computer.

You need to do some modifications in the Registry so that the Drivers of the DVD Drive will be completely removed and reinstalled once you restart the machine.

If the Operating System in the Notebook is Vista, you need to try the steps listed in the link below :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us

If the Operating System in the Notebook is XP, you need to try the steps listed in the link below :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

You may not find both the Upper and Lower filters...you may find either the Upper or Lower filter or both where you need to delete them according to the instructions and restart the computer to get the issue fixed.

Hope this helps...

Dvd drive wont work

That error and a number of other error codes can be reported for a DVD or CD writer if something has damaged one of the filter drivers, which are called Upper Filter and Lower Filter drivers in the Windows Registry. They can be installed by CD-writing software such as Roxio Easy CD, or by DVD players such as PowerDVD, or by programs such as Musicmatch Jukebox.
Microsoft describes the problem in MS Knowledge Base article 314060 - CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, or Code 39 after you remove Roxio Easy CD Creator in Windows XP at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314060.
The article applies to Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional It implies that the problem is caused only by Roxio software, but the error can occur with any type of CD-writing or DVD software. Error messages that may occur when you try to access your CD or DVD drive include:
1. - Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the Registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
2. - This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
3. - A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)
4. - Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
5. - Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
However, there are other causes for these and similar messages. The solution provided below applies mainly to CD or DVD drives. For other explanations, read this MS Knowledge Base article - http://support.microsoft.com/?id=310123.
Uninstalling and then reinstalling CD-writing and DVD software may cure the problem, but in other cases, such as yours, the Windows Registry has to be edited in order to fix it. Making erroneous changes to the Registry can render a computer unbootable, so before you edit it, use Windows XP's System Restore to create a restore point that will allow you to restore it in Safe Mode, or export the keys from the Registry editor by using its File => Export feature. For more information, enter the word Registry in the Search box of Start => Help and Support.
Enter regedit in the Start => Run box to run the Registry Editor and click on the + signs to expand and highlight the following keys:
H_KEY _LOCALMACHINE => SYSTEM => CurrentControlSet => Control => Class => {4D36E965E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE 1 0318}
There should be many keys called {4D36E965E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE 1 0318}
If you want to export a copy of the values, select File => Export and enter a suitable filename, which will be saved as a .reg file that can be restored just by clicking on it. When you select a particular key, in the right window, for some of them, you should see keys called UpperFilters and LowerFilters. Select each such entry in turn, right-click with the mouse on it, and click Delete. After closing the Registry Editor, you should be able to use the CD/DVD drive again. However, you may have to reinstall software that accesses the drive, such as CD writers and DVD players.

Try this but be careful to find the exact key as not to do damage!

Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.
