Question about Meade Optics

On a meade ETX 90RA Premier edition

On a meade ETX 90RA i just got (used)the objective lense appears to have some kinda smudging on the inner surface and the entire scope was left open to dust via the eyepiece aperture being left open during storage otherwise it seems to function normally but has no internal barlow. If this scope were refurbished would it be a much better scope than a new ETX80-AT? Also would the 10 digit handbox(cat# unknown)be interchangeable with the ETX 80 handbox wich has no 10 digit keypad (cat# 494) and would i want to?The ETX80 is new but the 90 accepts more accessories would i be better off with the 90 refurbished and would you have any idea what that might cost. Also are there manuals available for the 90 from meade.Given the situation what would you reccomend fixing the 90 or keeping the 80.Also i cant tell how old the 90 actually is and im new to this and dont know the diff between altaz and LNT.The 80 has no finderscope or even a place i can see to mount one.If you were in my place and on a budget what would you reccomend, also is there somewhere to obtain a manual should i choose to keep the 90.Basically is there that much difference between the two to make it worth investing in getting the 90 fixed up aside from the better accessorie options i.e.electric focuser etc and the mere 50x magnification.Comparing scopes by looking at the moon the 80 with the barlow seems to give a much better view than the 90 without but im assuming part of this may be due to the optics being in such bad shape.I know this is about 5+ ?'s but if you were in my place wich would you choose to do fix up the 90 or sell and keep the 80,remember im on a tight budget.I appreciate any advice you can offer.Thank You.Bob

Contact Meade and see what they charge to CLEAN the telescope:

http://www.meade.com/support/index.html

I seem to remember it was about $100 plus shipping. The 80 is a completely different telescope style-- the 90mm is a Maksutov Telescope.

I have an older model meade etx astro telescope i see nothing but black when looking through my telescope..the lense cover is off...the mirror is in the up position like it should be....its nothing but...

Can you see Light through it during the day time? If you can nothing is wrong. Put the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the TOP and try focusing on a distant object during the day time.

Turn the focus knob until you get a sharp image.

When I look through the lense everything is just black

Take the scope outside during the day time. Put the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the TOP diagonal. There is a "flip" switch on the back that changes between the rear photo port to the TOP eyepiece port.

Flip it one way or the other until you can see light through the TOP eyepiece. Practice focusing on a distant object during the day time.

My son took his meade etx-70 apart can't remember which way objective lens is supposed to be facing down the tube when it came time to put it back together.

NEVER take a lens out of an eyepiece or telescope, only clean the outer surfaces.

Try putting the flat sides together and see if that works.

Meade "might" sell you the replacement part. But most likely they will want you to return the scope for repairs.

Focus Issues

Try tightening the grub screw that fastens the knob onto the shft that it turns.

Better still, buy a flexible extended focusser which makes focussing much easier. Check on eBay for "Meade flexible focus"
