Question about Sony VAIO PCV-W1 PC Desktop

1 Answer

Hi, I have quite a rare pc - a Sony PCV-W1G all-in-one desktop (built-in screen/keyboard etc) - and until this week has given me over 6 years good service. The day before yesterday, having left it always on as usual I returned home to find it with a blank screen, while seemingly still running, but was completely unresponsive to keystrokes and power-downs via the main on/off button. On power-cycling the mains it restarted as normal. Then yesterday the same happened, but upon power-cycling (multiple times) it does not restart. It just runs the fan, and the power and hard-disk lights remain solid orange. Again unresponsive to any keystrokes or button presses, with blank screen, and seems not to even start to try and boot up. I searched the web and found this site another user who had exactly the same problem in Oct/Nov last year. I would like to know if you or he resolved the problem so that I might do the same. His user ID is davey_donohu. Can I/you send him a message via this forum to find out how he got on? Regards Dean-pcvw1

It could be any number of things, most likely the power supply or motherboard. If the computer is 6 years old, you're probably better off getting a new computer than trying to troubleshoot and fix it. Other parts will start to go bad soon, including the hard drive, and you'll find yourself spending more money to keep the computer running.

Upgrading the motherboard and cpu shouldn't be a problem. Sony cases are bought in so they will fit most mATX motherboards. You could buy a CPU and motherboard bundle that comes fully built and tested with memory included for about 100 to 200 GBP Maplin, Aria and Novatech do some good bundles and have a good help service if you get stuck putting it together.

Power cable at rear of sony vaio pcv desktop sparking and not starting up

Stop using it. Bring it to a repair shop ASAP. You need your PSU replaced and if you keep using it you'll need your motherboard replaced as well. In fact if you keep using it you could burn all of your internal components out.

First of all, the Sony Vaio desktop case is like trying to open Fort Knox. It is quite well built, but hardly gives any clues about how to open it to work on it inside. Here's a link that specifically addresses this situation:

The video may be going out. Tablet screens are intended to be pressed, touched etc.. But I have seen the video start to go out on them.

I would send it in for service.

Vaio keyboard ?

I just finished working on a pcv-w510g and in my case it seems some liquid was dropped on it, and the chip is messed up. (i saw this when i opened it). you can try to:
Plug in another keyboard and type in the password.  Try to acess the bios and disable stop on keyboard errors. Or open the keyboard and unplug it compleatly if it helps.
Or take out the HDD and put it in an external enclosure or in another pc to get the data off.

First and foremost, laptops are quite difficult to take appart. A great deal of care and know how are required. It is also very easy to further damage them if not correctly and carefully disassembled. I do not recomend you service this yourself, from experience I have broken quite a few laptops requiring far more work then the original problem/s. But to get to trying to help you. Remove all casing screws that hold the upper and lower case together or to other parts. if you look on the back of the monitor hinges, there are screws there, when removed you open the screen fully back and pull up on them to remove the top. This generraly holds the keybeard down. Be careful not to damage the keyboard cable. Unplug the keyboard and check for screws under it. You should be able to seperate the case now using a small screwdriver to push all the release tabs around the case. Good Luck, and again I don't recomend doing any of this.
