Question about Canon EOS Rebel XSi Digital Camera

2 Answers

I was taking a picture of a moose at Yellowstone and changed lens. I forgot to turn off the camera before switching and the camera just shut down. It won't take a picture or focus the lens in AF mode? I can view my previous shots and downloaded them, but I can't take a picture!!!! And I am at Yellowstone and nowhere near a camera shop!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Try reverting your EOS Rebel XS to its factory default settings:

  1. Under the 'wrench with three dots' icon, select 'Clear Settings' and press SET
  2. Select 'Clear all camera settings', and press SET
  3. Select 'OK' and press SET.

With any luck, this will be enough to jump start life back into your camera.

If not, you can reset the brain of your camera by updating / replacing its firmware. I wrote a Fixya Tip about that which you can find here: Canon Rebel XS Firmware Update WIN.

That ought to bring it back into proper behavior if the settings reset doesn't.

I hope that helps

I guess you've removed the batteries, and reinserted them, in the hope of resetting the camera. The focusing lens could be slightly jammed. You can gently try to hit the side of the camera with the palm of your hand, in the hope of resetting the lens, thereby allowing the lens to rotate and focus, restoring the camera's operational functions. This is all I can suggest, without disassembly, and I hope it works for you. You might also put the other lens back on, and hope the camera resets- turn it off and back on a few times, and see what happens. Sorry this happened on vacation, and I hope you can get it working again, good luck!

Please recheck on the work that was done earlier as the mechanism could be jammed and not reponding to shut down. SInce the lens was taken out and reset if the auto focus/zoom mechanism was struck or jammed this can cause the camera to shut down.

Keeps saying to turn off camera and won't take pictures

What the troubleshooting guide suggest is to turn off the camera and turn it back on which sound like what you have been doing. The cause of this generally points to a camera malfunction between the camera and lens. This makes me believe that either something is restricting the lens from moving like the lens cap is tethered to the camera and tight on the lens so it can't do it's "pre" view and goes into the shut down mode. If the lens has any restriction be it the lens cap, ever ready case or anything that is restricting the lens movement remove it and try it again. I have another theory which is completely opposite to anything even suggested and that is the camera can't read the SD card so goes into shut down mode. If you remove the SD card and check to make sure the "lock" switch is in the unlock position. I'll give you a diagram for this.
The little switch needs to be pushed forward towards the gold contacts.

My olympus camera wont take pictures

It sounds as if the lens mechanism is damaged, and when it tries to protract it fails and shuts down.

When you just switch to camera mode, I would try helping the lens come out to get it loose.

If all fails, send in it to be serviced, but expect to pay no less than $80 to get this problem fixed.

Hope I helped,
Tom

Camera turns on BUT then get "lens error restart camera" msg

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

I found an online manual for your camera. Page 84 talks about the USB Mode Normal with the 4 dots underneath. It also show a troubleshooting area for this and it is on page 96. Hopefully this will get your camera working right again. Here is the link to the pdf manual. http://www.docs.sony.com/release/DSCW1.pdf
