Setup Screen 3 has an option for "Clear all camera settings" which will reload the defaults. If that's not what you need, you could try re-installing the firmware, but if the firmware is corrupt, you likely can't launch it. If your camera is just locked up, try removing the battery and reinserting. If that doesn't do it, Canon's Tech support can be suprisingly helpful: 1-800-OK-CANON, or you can download the manual from - here's a shortcut to the 40D download page from the above site: (The actual Camera Instruction Manual is the last item under "Guides and Manuals"). If I'm misunderstanding the problem, feel free to respond.

My Sony TRV950 has lost all functions. I can't set manual white balance, shutter speed etc. Any ideas? Thanks

  1. Try resetting the camera with the power on. The reset button is located (very small) on the function panel behind the LCD display. Activate with a pencil, paperclip, or similar.
  2. If resetting the camera doesn't work, you will need to send it in for repairs.

Reset option and clean sensor option are not visible in set up menu. Canon D20 I had a two spots that kept appearing in the same area of the photo so I looked at the manual and did the clean sensor...

First of all - great camera! Check out for a lot more information on the functionality. The sensor clean function only raises the mirror and exposes the sensor so that it can be professionally cleaned so that may not solve the problem of the spots. Furthermore, be extremely careful if you have the lens off when doing this as you can make the problem even worse. I would recommend you take it to a good local camera shop and ask them to clean the sensor for you. In the UK it costs around GBP30.

Can i reset the settings to the original factory settings?

In order to reset the camera settings to its default values you need to do the following:

-Press the MENU button
-Use the left or right arrow keys to select the Settings menu (its icon looks like a wrench and hammer)
-Use the up or down arrow keys to scroll to the choice that says "Reset ALL..."
-Press the "Func./Set" button to confirm your choice.

This will reset the camera to its factory default settings.

Need to reset settings

hit the menu button, hit jump until you get to the last tab..."clear settings" and either hit clear all custom functions or clear all camera settings. Your dial might have to be on "P" for the last menu option to come up.

What does re store after reseting mean?

I wonder if this means you have to re-initialize the camera.
This changes everything back to the original shipping condition. It does not erase the owner id setting or the clock setting.
To do this Set [Camera Functions]>>[other functions2]>>[Initial set]>> [yes].
Initializing will take some time and [COMPLETED] is shown with some beeps.
This is taken from my manual.

Will the settings be retained in the camera after turning off the power?

Yes. The camera holds current settings including any changes you have made while turning off the power. If you prefer the original settings you can use the RESET function to reset to the factory default settings.
