Why won't my ride on mower start makes winding noise ?

Check the blade on the mower. Make sure it is tight and that the shear pin has not been broken. There is a shear pin on the crankshaft that keeps the blade from turning along with the nut that holds the blade on. designed to break off if you hit something with the blade. That is so it doesn't bend the crankshaft. Also make sure that the starter works and that the gear that turns the flywheel has not broken off a tooth.

Lawn mover starter rope replacement

most starters can be taken off the engine and replace the rope without completely tearing the whole unit apart. by that I mean you should not have to mess with the recoil spring unless it is broken. remove old rope from pulley, wind up the pulley and hold it so it wont unwind, replace new rope onto pulley and tie a good knot and melt the ends of the rope so it wont unravel, then slowly let the pulley retract the correct amount of rope. if the recoil spring has unsprung on you, it will take a little time and probably several tries to wind it back up and position it back in the starter. they like to unspring while doing this so take some time and an extra person to hold and assist might go a long ways. good luck. Installing new pull cord and it wont retract, what did I do wrong?

You have to wind up the spring before installing the cord. Look which way the spring goes, wind it up tight, back off enough to insert the cord through the hole in the outside housing, tie a knot inside the inner pulley. Slowly let the spring recoil while allowing the cord to go in. Cut the cord to the proper length, put the end thru the handle, knot it and attach the assembly back to the mower.

Pulled the cord out of the mower trying to get it back.

you have to remove the top of the mower and you may need to buy a new spring depending if it broke or not, then wind the spring up and slide the rope back through the holes and tie a knont in the rope and let the spring wind the rope back in. reassemble the top on to the engine.

the spring below the cord 'spool' must be wound tight before new cord is attached.disconnect cord, wind spool in the direction cord would pull it when starting until it stops & hold it there[spring is wound] release it enough to align & attach cord.release spool & allow it to wind cord onto spool.replace cover.
