You may need to reset your device and you will see a reset button at back of your router so all you need is to keep holding it for 10 seconds then unplug the power jack for like 1 min and then your device shall be reset. But please make sure to backup your all settings first. Best of Luck

Weak signal from cable modem

if you rent the modem ask for a swap. If you own it ask for a rental roughly 3$ a month. This will give you a way to compare speeds. Have cable company come out and check signal of cable at modem first. The signal should be between +10db to -5db. I wouldn't recomend anything outside that and preffer a +5db range signal. Causes could be damaged line,to many splits to modem etc. You could use a 1000Mhz amp usually 15db's don't use a 900Mhz radio shack or any thing under 1000Mhz for data (internet). 900Mhz is ok for video but I have no desire to own one. Yes modems do **** out in first use or after 5-10 years. Try to use power conditioners or at least a surge protector for anything with a circuit board. Good luck.

Netgear software, picks up wireless network then loses connection moments later

Netgear generally functions well. You may simply need to adjust the location of the router. Check the signal strength when you do have a signal. You may be losing a signal intermittently because the signal is weak. If your signal is "good" or better and the signal is lost without apparent reason, there could be a malfunction with the router itself. Check the router when the signal is lost and ensure the power light is on and the connection light is on.

If your signal is weak and you lose it intermittently, adjust the location of the router

If your signal is strong and you lose it intermittently, you may be experiencing a connection problem at the source or the power may be cutting out at the modem. The more likely answer is the source signal interruption. It is rare for a power supply to go bad in those.

Check the source connection INTO the router.

You can also reset the router. You'll want to unplug everything. Unplug the power supply from the wall AND from the modem and leave it unplugged for at least 2 minutes. There may also be a very small recessed reset button (the kind that you need to use the end of a paperclip to press). Press and hold that for 10-30 seconds to reset while it's still plugged in.

When you plug everything back in, plug the power in first (to the wall and modem), then connect the source cable. Wait until you have a signal confirmation light, then try to connect with your computer.

Last but not least, the connection problem could be with your computer. Try pluging directly into the source if possible and see how that works. Then try just moving close to the wireless modem and see how the signal strength is and if you lose the signal the same way. If there is a switch on your computer to turn on the wireless feature, make sure it's all the way on. Sometimes these are kind of stuck between 'on' and 'off' and that can cause problems.

I hope one of these suggestions helps you!

Check your DSL Filters on your house phones or anything connected to the phone line EXCEPT the modem. The modem should not have a filter on it. If this doesnt help I would recommend getting your ISP out to test the line because sometimes the resisitors or hardware in the box goes bad or at the DSLAM.

The next thing I would check is a close inspection of all the bad capacitors on the board. If you need an idea of what they look like check here.

RESET THE PWOER TO THE MODEM ON WHICH FUNCTION KEY

Power to all internal peripherals is cut when the system is shut down. If for some odd reason your modem is holding a charge, you can unseat it from the motherboard and reconnect it before rebooting. If you explain more in detail, I may be able to fix your problem.

Are you trying to use wireless? If so, do you have poor signal? I would suggest browsing to your modems interface. Type gateway.2wire.net into your web browser. Click on the Homenetworking icon. Select wireless settings. Type in your system password. Increase the power of your wireless setting located towards the bottom of the page. You can even try changing the wireless channel. Save and then retry to connect. Make sure you are entering the network key correctly.

Ethernet vs. usb

FYI for those people trying to use a ethernet and usb cable from a cable modem - it may work for a while but it won't work forever - your ISP will only allow one IP address out of the modem unless you pay for additional addresses (then you need a switch). Each device you have on the modem is fighting for that IP and eventually it will just quit working (if it works at all).

If you want more than one computer on your network (on the Internet or sharing printers/files, etc) then you need a router or a gateway (cable modem/router combo which I DON'T recommend).

Mac and Thompson router

I've run into cable modems that don't like to use ethernet sometimes. In cases like this, I have to do a soft reset of the modem and things usually work again.

To do a soft reset, do the following:
  1. pull the power cord from the modem
  2. count to 5
  3. hold down the power button on the modem
  4. plug back in the power
  5. count to 30 while holding the power button (the modem should be blinking a lot)
  6. release the power button and see what happens.
