Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Hi I have a Mitsubishi WS-55809 Rear Projection TV purchased in 2001. In the past week the picture at some times seems to separate and tear. Then at other times is perfect. But the separation (looks like a triple image with the colors pulling apart) is getting more common. Is this a circuit board or a bulb issue? I doubt it is a bulb issue since sometimes the picture is perfect. Is this something that is repairable or is it not worth repairing the TV? I have never changed the bulbs in this TV.

Hi,
WS-55809 is rear projection tv that has three picture tubes to generate picture on front screen. This tv does not have bulb/ lamp like dlp tv to replace in every couple of years.
Symptom shows it is lose connection/ dry solder joint in convergence section of tv and its an easy fix, local tv tech will fix it under $120 or so.
If picture is still good, sharp colors than tv worth to repair.
Hope these info will help you.
Thanks.

The picture flickers occasionally. I am wondering if the bulb is going.

The WS-55809 is a rear projection TV and does not have a bulb, it has 3 picture tubes. DLP and LCD Projection sets have bulbs, or mercury vapor lamps. Does your picture flicker equally with different inputs?

It will cost between 30.00 - 70.00 dollars to do it yourself depending on if you buy the parts seperate or as kit.

Harker, the convergence circuit has failed, IC`s and possibly a couple of support resistors, that`s a good set, call around to your local shops and get a few estimates, waay better set than the new dlp and lcd sets in my opinion, any questions? e-mail me back, Happy Holidays, BMW Rider

Screen turning pink

If the pink overlay goes away gradually, you could have weak picture tubes (CRT's) If the color jumps in after warming up, it could be a bad solder connection. If you haven't had a good picture to watch for a long time, I would be tempted to put the money towards a new HDTV set as those older Mitsubishi Rear Projection TV's had a Lot of bad solder connections in the past, and by fixing one problem another could crop up in the near future.
