Question about Washing Machines

Automatic washer won't engage in wash cycle or spin cycle. Amana washer Manu model PALW880QAW1

Hello,
I have just replaced the following parts on this machine. Hub and seal kit(p/n R9900457), drive bell and seal kit (p/n R9900189), Bearing underside of wash tub, lower bearing under transmission and a new belt. After putting the machine back together, as mentioned in the directions, I put water in the machine set it to final spin for 30 to 60 seconds.
Now to my present problem. The washer will fill but as soon as it switches to the wash cycle I get a humming / buzzing sound for the timer area. If I help the wash tub by hand it will engage. The motor sounds heavy, like it is forcing.
Please keep in mind that I had no problem prior to replacing the items mentioned, they were replaced because the seal was leaking and the bearing (tub) was noisy. Is it possible that if I over tightened the hex nut that holds the hub assembly to the transmission that it would cause this problem?

    Hi,
As I mentioned the machine will fill, the connections are good. I have gone further and isolated the problem to either timer or motor. I am pretty sure it is the motor, as I can now get it into agitate and when it needs to switch to spin to empty, it will get hung up and the motor will just hum. I shut the machine off, I will turn the drive pully to disengage to clutch then turn the washer back on and it will start. Unless I am missing something on it how it functions...It's the motor.
P.S. I have also removed the belt when it does this to rule out the Transmission/drive assembly. It still hums??

Hi,

Check you have the hot and cold water supply turned on. Check the water inlet hoses are not kinked.

Goodluck,
Please don't forget to rate the solution.

Yes, you definitely have tightened it too much.
I do not recall what the torque should be for that, but I think you should check out the tightness of the spanner nut and look at the drive block under the tub.
If the drive block if bad, you will have to replace it.
The symptom for this is if the tub spins free by hand but not when the motor turns it.

Yes surely that could be one of the reason (due to over tightening) also i request you to carefully check if there is any crack on the body since it is a bit aged. Also try to apply lubricant to all the necessary joints and moving parts.

Thankyou

Won"t spin or agitate. Makes a loud rattling noise

If this is a Whirlpool manufactured TOP LOADER (such as Roper, Estate, Kenmore, Amana, and Frigidaire), you may have a damaged or broken motor coupling. Whirlpool manufactured top loading washers use a motor coupling between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission) in place of a drive belt. This configuration is known as "direct-drive". The coupling can break through normal wear and tear. Washing frequent loads of heavy items and reduce the life span of the coupler. Common symptoms include the following:

1. No spin or agitation.
2. Washer will fill and empty.
3. Drive motor still runs.
4. Strange rattling, grinding or clicking noise during agitation or spin cycles as the drum sits still.

If your washer is exhibiting these symptoms, then its probably a safe bet that the motor coupling is bad.

The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The part number for a replacement motor coupling is inlcuded in the link I provided. Replacements can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
appliancepartspros.com
pcappliancerepair.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I have listed also included helpful exploded view parts illustrations to assist you with locating and properly identifying any parts you may need.

If you have any questions, please post back with your complete MODEL NUMBER (located on a nameplate along the wash tub rim under the lid) and let me know. I hope this helps you.

NFW7200TW washer won't engage spin cycle

We had the same problem with the same model machine and solved it.

Our machine was a month old and started getting stuck at minute 8, so we arranged service calls through Amana customer service. Long story short, the first three service reps couldn't figure out the problem. Two of them called Amana's in-house tech support line and the Amana techs didn't know what the problem was. The fourth repairman was smarter than his predecessors. He called the Amana in-house tech line, spoke to a rep who didn't know what was wrong, and then called in again. He explained that. based on his experience, some in-house techs knew more than others. That turned out to be the case because on his next call-in to Amana, that rep knew exactly what the problem was and recommended replacing the main computer board module. The repair guy ordered and installed the part. The machine has been working perfectly for a month.
