Tines will not turn when engeged. made a grinding

Tines will not turn when engeged. AT the end of last year I was tilling up my garden it started to making a grinding noise and the tines quit turning. When I pulled the tiller out of the ground the started to work, so I went back to tilling ,and it did it again. I took it all apart and didn't see anything stripped out. There was no metal shaving anywhere. I never got a chance to check it out after that, till this year. I made two passes in my garden and it made that grinding noise again, and the tines do not turn at all. This is on a troy bilt horse tiller model #12204

It sounds like a problem with the drive pulley on the engine to me. Maybe the key is striped.

Something in the wheels drive is jammed preventing them from turning. That is why the turning belt starts to smoke when it is turning but cannot unstick the wheels. Need to unstick them for unit to work.

Craftsman rear tine tiller

If you cant move the tines by hand then I wouldn't think you sheared the pins, more like a gear box problem.

It appears that the gear case on your model is not capable of being serviced. The cost is over 300 dollars. There is a shear pin or similar connection in the case where the shaft connects to the pulleys. It has broken off and the shaft has no torque now.

The gear box on many tillers is usually a square headed plug like the drain plug on your car and of course it is mounted on either the side or the top of the gear box

I have a craftsman 19 in dual rotating tines, rear tine tiller. # 917-293493. In mid till, the tines quit turning. Won't shift into any gear. Wheels are locked. Any ideas?????

It is going to be a transmission issue. You can try with the engine off, turning the trans pully by hand in the opposite direction that the motor was turning it.
Some gears in the trans got crossed up and locked.

If the tiller tines where jammed, the tranny and motor where still trying to turn and there could be a couple different parts broken. The tranny main shaft make have busted, the tranny gears could have jammed. If the motor does start, than that is a good sign. If not than the connecting rod or crank may have snapped.

I am guessing you will probably have to dismantle the transmission and see if there are any broken gears or shaft.
