Stand-by light blinking 7 times, wont turn on

This has been happening for a couple of years now, and has typically been temporarily resolved by turning off the TV and unplugging it for an extended period. Is there a quicker fix?

Probably should add, its a Sony Trinitron HD TV

  • jmc7285 May 27, 2010

Yes, that is the model number. I have seen several times that it is a high voltage failure and something to do with the horizontal circuits...I don't have a lot of technical knowledge about televisions. If I leave it off for weeks, it will probably work again, but I don't want to wait that long.

Any idea how much something like this might cost? A range, even?

Thanks so much for the assistance!

The 7 blinks is a diagnostic code. Please confirm that the model number is KV-36fs120. The diagnostic code is unique to each model. The fact that a power down would "fix" this if long enough, indicates that this is likely a heat sensitive part. I would geuss that the problem is on one of the power supply circuits. Please confirm the model number and I'll provide additional details.

If you can solder, try looking for poor solder connections around the flyback transofrmer and/or the horizontal output transistor. If the set still "recovers" by letting it sit for a while, the poor connections may be the only problem. If the solder connections are good, then the next likely suspect would be capacitors or hte regulator IC. The labor rate for a repair like this is location dependent. If the picture is good, I'd spend $150 or so for a repair. Much more than that amount and you can get a replacement 42" LCD for a little more.

Just a guess but could the be classed as a power save mode?
You could try pressing the stand-by button on the tv for about 10 to 15 seconds and see if it makes any difference.
I'm not sure if it will but I've been having to do the same thing on some NEC monitors I've recently been installing.
Sorry if it doesn't help.
Regards
Mike

Yeah, replace the set since it appears to be trashed. But if you have a few bucks lying around you might want to try replacing the unit's power supply to see if that resolves the many issues you have.

Typically, 4 blinks mean "Vertical Deflection Stopped." Chances are that you have a problem on the D board.

Tv wont come on and a red light is blinking. I have a Sony Wide screen projection TV model kp-46wt520

Can you unplug the TV for about 15 seconds, and then plug back in and watch the stand-by light. Tell me how many time the stand-by light blinks in regular intervals. If it doesn't blink at all, you need to change a fuse on the g-board. Once this is done run back through the stand-by blink light process, and more troubleshooting can be done if problem isn't already solved. If the stand-by light just keeps blinking with a count over ten just tell me, and I'll look for other possibilities.

Sony KV-34HS420 shuts of and stand-by light blinks

  1. Turn off the television. IMPORTANT: For a projection television that uses an internal lamp, wait 5 minutes after turning off the television to allow the lamp to cool before continuing with the following steps.
  2. Unplug the television power cord from the electrical outlet.
  3. Let the television remain without power for 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet. NOTE: If the television is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, remove it from the power strip or surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the issue is resolved, the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the television.
  5. Turn on the television.
If the issue is still unresolved after following all of the troubleshooting steps, service may be required. Please note the number of times the STANDBY light flashes and relay that information to the service center.

My sony wega keeps cutting off then coming back .

a couple of years old can be a long time:

has the TV been on 24\7

It's the amount of hours that matters..

electrolytic capacitors typically last 3000 to 5000 hours....

Special "long life" caps last close to 7000
but the caps in most consumer electronics, even broadcast equipment 3-5K hours.

The standby light should be blinking in a pattern. Count,pause,count... Please post the count and that will indicate the circuit in which a problem was detected. That will allow me to give you details and possible solutions.

Thanks,

Sony Trinitron XBR, Stand By Mode?

The 6 or 7 blinks usually indicate a problem in the horizontal circuit. Since the TV recovered once, the problem is most likely to be a bad solder connection in that area. If you can solder, resolder any connections on the board that appear grainy or have rings. That may resolve the problem. If not, update this and we'll look elsewhere for defective parts.

Stand by light blinks 6 times, wont power on

Here you find sony blinking codes

SIX Blinks---No Horizontal (H STOP), no raster, goes to the blinking selfdiagnosis
function immediately. Check C515 & 516 and the jungle IC, IC206.

SEVEN Blinks---High voltage shutdown. The high voltage has exceeded 33k
and the unit goes immediately into safety shutdown. Check power supply
regulation and horizontal circuits.
