If you are a bit adventurous and a bit patient, you perhaps can fix this yourself, and not require any disassembling. It worked for me on a similar 'carousel' unit... hp2550L.

For extra info, check this post out. http://www . fixyourownprinter . com/forums/laser/40284 (remove spaces)

If you look closely at the spot where a toner cartridge slips into a slot of sorts, you might see left side aligned and right side just a little off of 'good alignment' for that slot. What I did is to pull on the top of the black-plastic gear. Pull it toward the center of the printer.

There is a small, white gear at the very top of the black gear (not easy to see at first). By this pulling and bending of the black-plastic gear, you can get the gear teeth free of the white gear --- for just a moment. Just enough for the gear teeth to free-up and find their proper place. It doesn't take much.

When done, take a breadth and relax. Turn power off/on, and try it out.

Worked for me...almost....I pried the right carousel with a flat screwdriver away from the white gear and moved it one tooth on so it aligns with the left side of the carousel, (Looking from top of the toner cartrige guides on left and right side). Then I inserted all the cartridges and got a message to "insert Cyan cartridge". Thought I damaged the chip on the toner cartridge.

This problem I solved by moving both gears of the carousel (yes, left and right gear) one click back to better allign with the toner cartrige guides on top. You might have to move both forward depending on the alignment.

The carousel must have jumped a tooth because of a difficult turning toner cartrige (in my case the Yellow one). Check all toners so that the white gear on your right side of the cartrige (looking at the roller) can be easely turned in a clockwise direction. DONT turn it the other way !

Load your cartridges and drum unit and everything should be O.K. Great advice from Thanks to all.

I picked up the 2840 at a yard sale... P.O. said all it needed was a new drum so i ordered one along with all the toners. After installing parts printer would only print half of a page.... felt rather bumed out as i thought my money would be flushed down the drain, but after doing so searching i found numerous articles describing a solution. All except THIS response suggested taking the printer apart (which i'd rather not) to re-aligh the caurosel. Can I tell you that i went from feeling bummed out to the happiest guy around when I followed bobaloo579 and starmanss post and was able to FIX MY PRINTER in less than 5 minutes!
You guys rock! Keep up the excellent job!
    Thank a bunch!

I am adding a comment for the canon MF8170c and Canon MF8180c as this is a very common issue with the 2840's sister printers. Thanks to all again for getting me up and running!

Thanks for this guys! I have a Canon MF8170c (the sister printer) and was just about ready to call in the on-site tech as there was no information specific to my printer that I could find. I found a comment regarding the fact that my printer was the sister of the 2840, found this thread and I am now back in business. Thanks too for the above poster (sorry I don't have your name right now) who mentioned checking the drive gear on the toner carts... sure enough my black toner had a very tight gear and has now been replaced...Thanks again!

How to reset supplies on HP 2840 laserjet?

"Would like report of supplies from 2840 laserjet. How to get it to show report"

Select 'Menu" button, then select "Reports", then select "Supplies Report".

This will print the status of the four toner cartridges and the drum.

It doesn't make sense to reset toner cartridges UNLESS you refill them
first. On the HP 2840 each cartridge/drum contains a chip that measures
the life of the unit.

You can purchase toner/chip combinations online cheaper than new
cartridges. I also purchase drum chips to extend the use of my drum
until print quality actually starts to deteriorate.

I use both of these methods to save money on supplies - buy toner and
toner chips, buy drum chip to get full use of drum unit.

Hope this helps.

MY HP LaserJet 2840 has a brand new Toner cartridge. Now it won't print at all and we are getting a "OPC at end of life" prompt. What does this mean?

Imaging drum reach 20,000 (black only) or 5,000 (color), replace the image drum.

Supplies life
The life of the imaging drum depends on the number of black-only or color pages that print jobs
require. Imaging-drum life is also affected each time the device calibrates because calibrating causes the imaging drum to rotate. Imaging-drum life is measured in terms of number of rotations rather than number of pages printed.
The type and length of print jobs also affects drum life. A series of short print jobs uses more drum
life than an equivalent number of pages printed in a single large job. To extend drum life, print
multiple copies of a print job at one time rather than sending the same job to the device multiple times.
The life of a print cartridge depends on the amount of toner that print jobs require. When printing text at 5% coverage, black print cartridges last an average of 5,000 pages and cyan, magenta, and
yellow print cartridges last an average of 2,000 pages. High-capacity cyan, magenta, and yellow print cartridges last an average of 4,000 pages. (A typical business letter has 5% coverage.)

I have hp laserjet 2840 i replaced imaging drum and black cartrige now my printer says incorrect yellow and i cant get it go rotate or print?

If you used a compatible cartridge (as I assume) the problem is with the cartridge "CHIP", very common on compatible cartridges, return the cartridge or replace the chip. The chip is on the top of the cartridge and can be remove.

HP Laserjet 2840 asked for drum replacment afther only 5300 pages but should make 20000. Prits where still perfect but now it refuses to print. Any solutions how to keep using the drum?

Check online for refill instructions and where to buy the chip to replace on the drum, most of the drums today have little chips to replace that tell the printer when they are used up, even when there's still life in them.

My HP 2840 is printing blue lines on the side of the page

3 Causes for printing Blue Lines on the side of the pages.

01. If it happens with test pages from the machine itself as well as docs;then most likely it is a bad cyan cartridge.if you open the drum shutter on the cyan cartridge, can you see a line on the drum?

02. If the Drum is opened and you can see a continuous line of blue toner is at both sides of the drum. Chance of getting blue lines printed on the side of the pages.

03. If the cartridge is leaking then and will need to be changed.thats why it's ending up on the belt also and it prints blue line on the side of the pages.

Not printing on left side of page

The problem is that the revolving drum doesn't contact the OPC drum proberly. You have to open the left side off the machine and replace the little white gear on the shaft that drive revolving drum. The gear has "jumped"one step and the revolving drum isn't parallell to the OPC drum. I fixed my 2840 last night it takes some time but now it works perfect.
