Best probable cause here is the feeder sensor has wron out and its not detecting reqular stock. In this case I would humble replace the printer as a whole as it will only get worse over time. A new feeder $45 bucks labor = out the window. The easy way out of this is to try cleaning the unit really good but not all the time is that functional.

Thanks and please be considerate and leave postive votes and feedback

Paper thickness error

From page 88 of the User Guide.

For your printer you can use the following types of paper and other media.

??  Size

• Standard paper: From Legal size (8.5 x 14.0 in.) to A5 size (5.83 x 8.27 in.)
• Non-standard paper: From 3.54 x 4.72 in. to 8.5 x 23.0 in.
• Others: Envelopes (US Com. #10 and European DL)

Important ?ž₪ Do not use the following types of paper. Using such paper will not only produce unsatisfactory results, but can also cause the printer to jam or malfunction.

• Folded, curled or wrinkled paper
• Wet paper
• Paper that is too thin (less than 17 lb.)
Paper that is too thick* (more than 28 lb.)
• Picture postcards
• Postcards with an affixed photo or sticker
• Envelopes with a double flap
• Sealed envelopes
• Envelopes with an embossed or treated surface
• Paper with holes (such as loose-leaf paper)
* non-Canon branded paper

??  Weight

17 to 28 lb.

Do not use paper heavier than this (except for supported Canon-brand media), as it
could jam in the printer.
??  Types

The following types of media can be used. For more information about the media and the
printing methods, refer to the specific sections.

Plain paper: Refer to the printed Quick Start Guide.
?ž¡ Envelopes
?ž¡ High Resolution Paper HR-101N
?ž¡ Glossy Photo Paper GP-301/GP-301N
?ž¡ High Gloss Photo Film HG-201
?ž¡ Glossy Photo Cards FM-101
?ž¡ Photo Paper Pro PR-101
?ž¡ Photo Paper Pro PC-101S
?ž¡ Transparencies CF-102
?ž¡ T-Shirt Transfers TR-201
?ž¡ Banner Paper

If you are receiving a paper thickness error (are there lights flashing?) is the thickness greater than 28 lbs? You can refer to the User's Guide beginning on page 140 for infomration on error light patterns.

Have you set the Paper Thickness Lever properly? Looking at the printer from the front; To the left for normal paper; To the right for thicker product (e.g. envelopes, t-shirt transfers, banner paper).

Trust this is helpful. Please vote. :)

Try to set/change the Media Type from Plain Paper to Photo Paper Plus Glossy and print your text with plain paper.. perhaps it would solved your problem. i had the same problem but after done that way. i can print with the black ink, but only after i set the media type become photo paper... It will print colors fine on standard paper, but will not print on any type of photo paper.

I don't understand the comment that your canon will not print on any type of photo paper. I own the same printer. I have found that the canon i9900 does not print well at all on generic photo papers, it does poorly on Kodak photo papers, good on HP and excellent on Epson. Are you selecting Preferences/media type, then photo paper, paper pro, paper glossy or matte. What version is your driver. I updated mine last year and it did not work, I still use the original from the install disk, which I have.

On i850 canon printer (with slider to the right for thicker paper) won't 'grab' it and feed this thicker paper through makes clunking noises and attempts to no avail: have tried single sheet or several in...

make sure you use the correct paper size for the printers specification :

Media Type Matte photo paper , Banners , Glossy photo paper , High-gloss photo film , Iron-on transfers , Plain paper , Glossy photo cards , Transparencies , Envelopes
  • Max Media Size (Custom) 8.5 x 14.0
  • Media Sizes Letter A Size (8.5 in x 11 in) , U.S. #10 envelopes , European DL , Legal (8.5 in x 14 in) , A6 (4.13 in x 5.83 in)
  • Envelope Sizes US No 10 (4.1 in x 9.5 in)
  • Card / Label Sizes US 4 x 6 Card (4 in x 6 in)
  • Total Media Capacity 150.0 sheets
  • Media Feeder(s) 1.0 x Autoload - 150.0 sheets - Legal (8.5 in x 14 in)

  • if you are then you might want to try cleaning the printer pickup rollers with a lynt free cloth and a bit of alcohol if that does not solve the issue then you machine is fualty and if your still under warrenty I suggest you replace it

    PIXMA Ip4000

I assume you're using photo paper.

Go to File/Print. Click Properties. Click Media Type and chose the photo paper you are using, whether it's Photo Paper Pro or whatever. If you're printing using Plain paper and you have photo paper in the printer, you'll get the stripes.

    Hope that helps

Canon i990 prints are too "pink"

I had the same problem and it turned out to be a combination of the actual paper and media type. Brother brand paper just printed way too pink and some Ilford papers did also. I had an image that was desaturated and even when printing as a greyscale came out magenta.
Was three nights of hard work to get sorted. try printing on plain paper with media type set to plain paper. good luck with it though, I know how frustrating it can be!

    Won't print on normal paper

Refer to my previous post about manual under head cleaning and follow the routine through. This will most likely get you going as sounds like classic blocked nozzles. http://www.fixya.com/support/t137335-problem_print_outs_from_printer

Printer will not print black ink

Chewbacca08's solution gave me an idea. I set the print setting to photos paper (even though I was trying to print on plain paper) and IT WORKED. It's worth a shot before you trash a perfectly good printer.
