I am assuming you have a username on this cpu.
open a terminal and type sudo su
make a root password
as root you can use the following command
passwd (username)

If you do not have sudo privileges, use a live CD. I reccomend knoppix. mount the drive. Use the command "mount" to see what drives are available
then use the "passwd" to reset the passwd for whatever usernames you need to change.

I just read what I typed, and you need to to use the "mount" command prior to mounting the drive, so that you mount the right drive.

example: I type mount at the command prompt:
    mount
    /dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,relatime,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
    /sys on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
varrun on /var/run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=0755)
varlock on /var/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,mode=1777)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
devshm on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
lrm on /lib/modules/2.6.24-28-generic/volatile type tmpfs (rw)
securityfs on /sys/kernel/security type securityfs (rw)
    binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev)
    gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/mburford/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=mburford)
    /dev/scd0 on /media/cdrom0 type iso9660 (ro,nosuid,nodev,utf8,

    I want /dev/sda1
    it is my hardrive

    I type "mount -w /dev/sda1"
the -w makes the drive readable/writable, which I need it to be if I am going to store or change passwords there.

the drive gets mounted (is usable)
    then I type "passwd"
this allows you to change the root password, ubuntu by default does not enable a root account.
so you may want to type "passwd ***"
where ***=the username that you want to change the password for
to find out what usernames are available on your CPU just look in /home
all usernames will have directories there.

Ubuntu is a version of Linux that was designed to replace windows. When you get it sorted out it is really pretty good bordering on great. I'm stuck using wndow but used Ubunti enough to be impressed by it.

Your best bet is to get hold of the person who sold it or set it up. It's the obvious answer but the encryption used to store the passwords is pretty robust so there isn't an easy way to discover what it is. That encryption is designed to prevent anyone from breaking in so its pretty secure and in situations like yours rather annoying.

You can get a free install disk from Ubuntu and reinstall it which would wipe out the password files and everything ele. This isn't that bad a thing to do. It does let you setup everything including passwords etc and it lets you get more familiar with the operating system.

I think the best advice I can give you is to contact the Ubuntu user forums and see if someone can help you. This is all free of course and the prople there are right up to speed on everything. Someone might have a solution that won't be as drastic as a reinstall.

http://www.ubuntu.com/ is the main page and you can order cd's etc.

You can click on support on that page and it will give you a few options. The web based forum is pretty good and you get quick responses. http://ubuntuforums.org/

Create a free account so you can post and you should see a few ways to fix your problem..

Ubuntu in a distrobution of the Linux operating system. try www.linux.org for more info.
Ubuntu is one of the easyest to use but much more complex than any windows you may be used to. the password would have been set at the beginning of the install if you did not set this you do not no what it is try(root). you could reinstall linux ubuntu this is free softwear and to use adobe you need to download for the Linux version avalibal from adobe.com

Go to another computer and download Ubuntu from here http://www.ubuntu.com/. You'll need to burn the copy to CD (using an ISO burn utility, can be downloaded from MicroSoft or other download sites). Once you've obtained the newly downloaded copy, boot your pc using the CD you just burned and reinstall Ubuntu, here, you'll give it a new administrator password and will have a fresh copy to work with.

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution. You will need to purchase and install (or have someone install for you) a copy of windows.

I would advise that you take it to your local Staples and have them set it up for you.

How do I unlock a stolen computer?

The school cannot 'block' the computer. If you are asking how to get round a password, so you can use a stolen computer, you are on the wrong site. That is a criminal activity. You would be far better contacting the school and telling them you bought it innocently.
If you bought stolen property you should be trying to get your money back from the seller. Apart from that, are there no police where you live? They are the ones that are interested in people that sell stolen property.

Two thin lines

If your computer works fine with "lines" then you need a new LCD. If your computer does not work then you need to replace Logic Board.

I want to lock my laptop as it is stolen by someone.

You can't. Your intent to lock it will not make it happen. There are a number of ways to lock your data BEFORE the computer is stolen, but not after.

Dell Inspiron 5160 won't charge.

wow, ive never seen a computer know what type of adapter is plugged into it... it definately sounds like a power system problem. three parts to this- the adapter, the battery, and the motherboard of the laptop, since that is what interprets and passes on the power from the batter/outlet to the rest of the parts of your computer. we're hoping it isnt the motherboard not recognizing your power subsystem...

but you took a good guess to replace the adapter. you want to make certain the old adapter-- the voltage etc that's written on it in plastic somewhere- that it matches exactly with your replacement adapter. (You just cant plug these thing into any computer it fits into, they have different requirements sometimes, even though theyre all laptops). If it does, then yes, I would assume it's the battery.

Try taking out the battery and running straight off the current, can you do it? Technically, you shouldnt need the battery, it will just act like a desktop computer.

You can get a reasonable aftermarket latop battery for 100-135 bucks, chinese. Compare it to what your manufacturer wants to charge you for a replacement.

BTW- youre out of warrantee, right?

Good luck!

I have a Dell A525 Speaker system that I bought to use with a Dell projector and an Inspiron laptop computer. It worked fine until I had the computer stolen. Not thinking ahead I bought an HP computer...

The speakers can be used with the HP computer. The connection on the speaker set should look like the connector on a headset or headphones for an ipod. The connection for this can be located on the back of the computer near the location of where you plug in your monitor and keyboard. There also may be another location to plug this in at. If you had recently purchased this laptop, many manufacturers will put a connection the the front of the PC. Usually under a flap of some sort.

Can i track my toshiba satelite a105-s4324 laptop that was stolen in international transit from the US to cyprus?

Computers can not be tracked what-so-ever unles steps have been taken to do so beforehand. The only way you could tell if it was possibly being used is if you had a instant messenger program that starts when the computer starts.

When the computer connects to the internet the instant messenger would show you as online. You could then possibly get the ip of your stolen computer and then try to locate it through help from your isp and a lawyer.

However stolen computer vanish faster then stolen cash. Hard drives are wiped and serial numbers are taken off.

If this was a business laptop or if you had insurance on it, report it and fill out a report where it was stolen.

My registration of my computer

Did you get a receipt for it? Can you prove you purchased it? If you did, then you have proof so if he does report it as stolen you would win. You can certainly still use the computer though. I would run a recovery and set it back to factory defaults, when you do the Acer registration will run again and you can register it with Acer under your name but even if you didn't you can still use it.

Have been offered a laptop for sale but suspect it is stolen is there any way i can check the serial number online]ty

As far as I k**w, there are ** databases available for checking this kind of thing. Even if there were, it would only be useful if the owner actually reported something as stolen.

Basic rule of thumb: If you're offered something like this and it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Sorry ** direct answer on this one.
