Question about Brother IntelliFAX 4100 Laser Fax

1 Answer

The 4100 we have had for 4 or 5 years has stopped working - does not send or receive, and when I dial, the number is sporadic 3 digits, then 3 more, then 3 more, etc. sounds dire to me. but checking anyway.

Hello, make sure the papers are placed correctly before you start faxing, and also make sure all connections are in the right places.

Make sure the telephone wire is plugged into the line jack (not ext jack) and should go straight to the wall, without splitters or extensions. If you still cannot send a fax, try another wire or jack.

wish you good luck,

take care.

I have done all that,,, we have worked with it for many years and know how it should look. I think it is dead, and I have asked the charge to be reversed.

  • Hammid Disu May 26, 2010

HELLO,kindly check the charge very well, and i will also like to know if the fax machine powers on at all to allow you dial numbers or to fix the documents in it.if it doesn't power on,i will suspect the fax machine is dead as said.

    wish you good luck,

    take care.

Power is on, and it dials, but dials the numbers like I said 3 numbers, pause and then 3 more, pause, and then 3 or 4 more.. and nothing comes in or goes out. Just beeps as it tries to go thru in sending.

  • deb2trvl May 27, 2010

    Here is more:

The display says "telephone" sleep. The mode is set to FAX. Any ideas?

  • deb2trvl May 27, 2010

Every mode displayed shows "sleep" under it.. "dialing" etc. But then switches to "On LIne" instead of sleep And still nothing. Shall I give up?

Check the cable, i.e. plug an analogue phone into the cable and listen for a dial tone. If none, are you plugged into a digital line?

If a dial tone is heard, is it an intermittant dial tone (message waiting) because this can stop the fax from working. If so, resolve this and try again.

Do you need to dial a number to get an outside line? If so this needs to be entered before the fax number on outgoing faxes.

Brother Intellifax 4100 unable to send fax but can receive

Is the fax sensing the paper you put in to send out? Check the little black levers that poke into the document area. They should move freely when you touch them gently with a finger, and return quickly when you take your finger off. If it can't sense the paper it won't try to send a fax. If, when the paper is inserted, the display changes from whatever it said to anything else, the paper is being sensed.
Let's try dialing manually. Just left of the 1 key is a button labeled "Hook." Pressing that will take the telephone line "off-hook," like picking up the receiver of a phone. You should hear a dial tone -- if not, try adjusting the speaker volume with the buttons just right of the numbers. Once you get a dial tone, dial a number, whether it's another fax, or your own cell phone. As far as the phone company is concerned, your fax is just a phone, calling another phone. If you can make a call, and the phone at the other end rings, we're closing in on the problem. If you can dial another fax machine manually, you can still turn this into a fax call, assuming there's paper ready to fax. After the distant fax answers, touch the Start button, and your fax should take over. If you can't dial manually, try unplugging your fax from the phone line, and replacing it with a regular phone. Can you make calls with it? If not, the fax is no longer a suspect - you have a phone line problem.
Are you at a business where you need to dial 9 to get an outside line? It's easy to forget that detail when you're using a fax, but it has to dial out just like any other phone on the system.
If you can't get a dial tone at all with the fax, but it works with the phone alone, the main board in the fax is probably bad. If you can dial manually, using the Hook switch, but the same number doesn't work when you dial xxx-xxxx-Start, that sounds like a main board problem, too.

NEED THE MACHINE TO ANSWER WHEN THE PHONE SENDS THE SIGNAL.

After making my post, I went to the official Brothers website for the 4100 FAQs and "Operating Instructions." Here's what I found. Set your 4100 set to the "Fax/Tel" mode. Press "Menu", then the number 2 (Fax), then number 1(Set-up Receive), then number 1 again (Ring Delay). Use right arrow key to increase. Once increased, press the "Set" key. You'll see the message "Accepted." Now press the "Stop" key to exit "Menu." This will now give you up to 4 rings before the fax auto answers. Inorder to send a signal by phone to remote start the fax just follow the instructions I copied directly from Brothers instructions for the 4100: If you answer the call on an extension phone (this is any phone plug into a phone jack on the same line) and hear a beep every 3 seconds (automatic fax) or just silence (manual fax), press *51(remote activation code) on the telephone keypad, wait to hear the Brother machine turn on (chirping sounds) and then hang up. I don't have anyone that can send me a fax right now to test it out. I'll have to try it in the morning. Hope this works for you.
