Question about Dualit Expresso + Filter Espresso & Coffee Maker

Very little water is dripping into the carafe

When trying to make coffee, we pour water in the reservoir and it begins to sound like it is brewing. There is steam and the sound, but the water drips very slowly into the pot and doesn't actually finish. It's not working. We bought this at William & Sonoma a few years ago, but they no longer sell it and don't service it. What can we do? Help!

Try to run vinegar undiluted through the coffee maker first. If this does not help, you may have a plugged valve in the coffee maker or a tube/hole where the coffee maker water should drip through. if this coffee maker has a dispenser(where you put your cup against it and the coffee comes out) then there is likely a plugged up valve. This will require dismantling the coffee maker to clean it. Usually coffee makers get plugged up because coffee leaves a residue that requires scrubbing at time to remove.

    If the lid is open, the broad part that raises has a down tube that seals against the steam delivery tube in the back of the coffee maker. There is an O-ring at the base of the joining section and as this is rubber, it eventually dries out and becomes brittle. Try replacing the O-ring and also make sure that the flip up broad steam dispenser is not coming apart at the seams.

Coffee has doesn't drain into the carafe and just overflows all over the counter


1. Don't overfill the basket with grinds.
2. Ensure you are using the correct grind for an automatic drip coffee maker, neither too fine or too course. (See instruction manual.)

No manual with Bunn NHBX coffee maker.


before plugging in place your empty filter basket in the coffee maker and place a pot under it. Slowly pour in two pots of water using the pour pitcher. Now you can plug it in. it'll take 15 min to heat up first time . when you brew your first pot leave your water level a little short,because the water will expand (only the first time)

Don't understand how it works


This coffee maker has a hot water reservoir that heats and stores hot water so it can brew coffee faster. Once you fill the reservoir by pouring a potful of cold water into the top, you can turn on the switch at the side of the unit and in about 10 minutes the water in the reservoir will be hot. I usually leave this switch turned on to keep the water in the reservoir hot. The front switch turns on the pot warmer at the front of the unit, so it should be turned off unless you are making coffee or keeping a pot warm. To make a fresh pot, put a filter and ground coffee in the removable filter basket, slide the basket into the unit, place an empty carafe on the warming burner and using a separate container pour fresh water into the filler at the top of the unit. The fresh water displaces the hot water in the reservoir and voila, the coffee carafe starts to fill. The amount of fresh water you added is the amount of coffee you will end up with, less a little bit that might have evaporated if you only make coffee every morning or less often. Most units have a plunger under the filler lid that keeps the fresh water from going in to the hot water reservoir until you close the lid, so close it after pouring in the water. Also, turn off the front switch if the carafe is getting low or empty, as it can get hot enough to crack the carafe. If you're not going to be using the coffee maker for several days, turn off the side switch or unplug the unit to save energy and reduce evaporation from the reservoir. I love mine. It makes great coffee and is much quicker than the drip type.

Coffee overflowing and spilling out of the basket


Your coffee maker likely has the option where you can remove the carafe while it is brewing so that you can serve yourself in the middle of the brew. When you pull out the carafe in the middle of the brew, a small lever closes off the drip at the end of the basket (to keep the coffee from flowing onto the empty space where the carafe was on onto the burner).

Then when you replace the carafe, the lip of the carafe pushes against that lever and re-opens the valve so that the brew can now drip into the replaced carafe. Simple.

In your case, it appears that when you place the carafe onto the burner plate, it is not engaging that lever and opening up the valve; hence the valve stays closed and the brew fills over the basket and makes a mess, right?

So do this, pull out the carafe and look up where the pointed end of the basket drips into the carafe. You should see a lever, or plate that the carafe top lip hits when the carafe is placed into the burner plate. Once you find that lever, or plate, give it a push (like the carafe would) and see if it moves. if it does not, then that's your problem. It is stuck closed and won't allow the brew to exit the basket into the carafe. Clean it thoroughly if it is stuck and then see if works.

Mr Coffee stopped brewing


Sounds like there are a couple of problems -

First, are you certain that the coffee basket is clean? If the coffee basket has a valve on the bottom that allows you to remove the carafe to pour a cup of coffee, make sure the valve is clean. Being dirty would cause it to trickle coffee slowly into the carafe, and will hold coffee in the basket too long.

2nd, you may need to flush the water heating system as they can become corroded with precipitated solids from the water.
To do this, mix 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water in the carafe. Pour into the coffee maker and tell it to make coffee. Do this a couple of times, using a fresh mix of vinegar and water each time. Pour the used mixture down the drain.
When you feel it is clean, follow it up with a fresh pot of water. Then wash and rinse the carafe.

The coffee maker is now ready for it's next use.

Water overflow


If the water is running out the seams in the plastic BEFORE you brew anything, it is a defect or design flaw. I bought one that looks like the one pictured and it did the same thing. So did the replacement.

Coffee overflows


I have a 1600 with the same problem. The problem is due to a poorly designed fit between the carafe and the drain plunger in the coffee basket. If you lift the carafe slightly, you will see the plunger has a long way to go. If you have the tendency to push the carafe fully to the back of the hotplate it makes this worse. OK, so now the fix, which worked for me. Find a small piece of plastic to glue to the top of the carafe lid. You just need a small dimple to push the coffee basket spring in further when you in sert the carafe on the hotplate. You should experiment a little first to see how thick it needs to be. Overall it's a poorly designed combination and someone needs a lesson in tolerancing.
