My tilt/shift lens isn't working with my Minolta Maxxum 400si - the aperture which is controlled through the lens won't communicate with the body, is there a way around this?

Is this an auto focus lens? Most shift lenses are manual focus. Also, because they shift, they can generally only be used on manual not he auto settings. If the contacts are not on the back of the lens then it will on communicate with the body

What size lens do i need for this camera?

You just need any Minolta AF mount lens. Sony Alpha lenses also physically fit as Sony inherited the Minolta lens mount when they bought the company, but as they are a later development not all will be electronically compatible.

The size of the lens depends upon the focal length of the lens and you choose that according to how wide a field of view you desire. Typical lenses are 28 and 35mm wide angles, 50mm "standard" (approximately the same perspective of how the human eyeball sees images), 70 to 90mm short telephoto lenses (a narrower perspective and very good for portraits) and higher numbers are narrower perspective telephoto lenses for viewing increasingly distant objects. In practice, the available lenses will be incorporated into zoom lenses which incorporate a seamless range of focal lengths within one single model. The word "zoom" reflects the fact that you can seamlessly change from say 28mm wide angle through to 80mm short telephoto and every single setting between them

Any zoom which starts at less than 50mm and finishes in the short telephoto range is called a standard zoom and is the lens that most autofocus cameras were supplied with. The next most common size will be something like a 70-200mm which is a telephoto zoom (or tele zoom) and takes you from a portrait lens to a genuine 5x magnification telephoto. You may also find so-called "super zooms" which do the whole job on one, for example 28-200mm. but the more jobs a single lens tries to do, the bigger and bulkier it becomes and the image quality deteriorates due to poorer contrast and greater image distortion at each end of the zoom range.

This is not an exhaustive answer, as there are entire books on the subject, but hopefully it's been of help to you.

Is it possible to manually control the shutter speed, aperture, AND the focus on the Konica Minolta Maxxum 400si SLR 35mm film camera? I need to be able to manually control these features for a film class...

Yes. You have full control over the shutter speed and aperture in the Manual exposure mode, as described in the "M Mode: Manual Exposure" section in the manual.

You also have full control over the focus, as described in the "Manual Focus" section in the manual.

If you need a manual, you can download it (in two parts) from

Is it possible to manually control the focus on this camera? (Konica Minolta Maxxum 400si SLR 35mm Film Camera) I need to be able to manually control the focus, apeture, and shutter speed for a film...

The description of the manual focus is available in part 2 of the manual, page 40. The manual is available as a PDF here: http://ca.konicaminolta.com/support/manuals/film-cameras/film_af_slr/index.html#si_series . It is the seventh camera in the SI series in the list.

To manually focus the lens, press the focus-mode button on the front of the camera (bottom left when you are behind the camera) until M. focus appears in the data panel. If you have an AF lens, turn the focusing ring until the subject appears sharp. If you have an xi-Series or AF Power Zoom lens, pull and turn the lens control ring.

The focus indicator will light when the subject is in focus. To return to autofocus mode, press the focus-mode button again. The camera will also return to the autofocus mode if you press the program reset button.

I hope this helps.

(in manual focus, you can take a picture even if the subject in the focus frame is not in focus. Often it means you need to take multiple pictures to get a good shot of the subject. The advantage is that you can get some interesting shots.)

Konica lenses do not fit Minolta cameras. I think you messed something up.

Minolta MC and MD lenses worked on the older manual focus Minolta bodies. They will also work on the Phoenix and Seagull clones of the old Minolta bodies.

The Konica lens should only ever be mounted on a Konica camera.

Your 7000i is now a Minolta paperweight. You need to send your 7000i for repair or replace it.

You could also look on Ebay for another Maxxum body to use your lenses designed for the Minolta A mount. As a rule, camera lenses are not interchangeable. You can use any Maxxum lens on any Maxxum body as a rule, but Minolta changed their flash shoe after the original 7000 series. Flashes that work with your 7000i will work with any subsequent Maxxum.

Trying to use a Phoenix 500mm telephoto lens and the shutter won't release

Some longer Tele lenses extend into the camera and prevent the mirror from moving up on some models with larger mirrors. One solution> get a 1.4 teleconverter It will add some space between camera and lens. Two solution> buy another Maxxum body on Ebay. Some Maxxums can be bought very cheap.

Minolta SLR Lens on Sony - Does it work.

As I understand it, Sony bought Minolta, lock, stock, and barrel. Theoretically the lenses should fit and may work on manual, but I'm very sure they will not totally work on sony digital cameras. I wouldn't even try to fit them as the autofocus system on the camera may be damaged.
