Make sure the pilot light is hitting the thermocoupler, even when burner kicks in. Sometimes a dirty pilot tube will cause a weak pilot and it wont continuely hit the thermocoupler. I use air to clean mine. Hope this helps.

Why does my pilot light on my hot water take not stay lite

It depends on many factors, including brand, type of heater, age, gas pressure, maintenance, venting, proper installation of thermocouple, bad thermocouple, air intake cleaning, if the flame is clear blue etc.

I HAVE AN ATTWOOD WATER HEATER I LIGHT THE PILOT ON GAS AN PILOT WILL NOT STAY LITE AFTER RELEASING THE BLUE KNOB SO I CHANGE THE HEATING COUPLING AN STILL DOING THE SAME THING

Try spraying some WD-40 in hole where thermocouple attaches to gas valve, then twirl a small piece of steel wool in your fingers and insert it in that same hole and twirl it as you push it in to clean surface where thermocouple makes contact. Then blow out with compressed air if possible and then re-install thermocouple fitting snuggly. If that doesn't do it, you'll have to get a new gas valve/control.

Basemnt flooded water heater wont stay lit ever since, taken out burner assembly severl times now stays on long enough to heat water then shuts down soon after.replaced thermocoupler and have to lite...

Sounds like the air intake is clogged, and pilot and burner tubes are dirty.
All manufacturers say that flooded water heater should be replaced and not repaired.

You can clean air intake and burner assembly, and then next step would be to replace burner assembly and replace gas valve thermostat to see if functionality returns.
Expense of replacing parts is about half the cost of new gas water heater from box store, and still no guarantee that old heater will work.

I have a Rheem PG50T9A gas hot water heater. We had hot water this morning. When I came home the pilot light was out and won't stay lit. Any ideas?

Hopefully just the thermocouple. The thermocouple is the small rod right next to the pilot light. The flame on the pilot heats up the thermocouple and keeps the gas valve on. You can replace it yourself. The thermocouple will be connect by a small nut on the underneath side of the valve, and you will have to pull the thermocouple out of the pilot assembly. Not an expensive part, you can get it at any hardware store. Hope this helps you .

Pilot lite does not lit please advise what to do.the burner stays on if lit directly with open flame.is this dangerous.

What you describe is typically caused by a faulty thermocouple. The thermocouple senses the heat from the pilot light and TURNS OFF the pilot when it no longer senses the heat.
When the thermocouple turns off the pilot, it's not necessarily dangerous, but the water heater won't turn on without help.

Pliot will not stay lit

There is an ignightor, and a thermocoupling. The thermocoupling is a sensor that is used to tell if the pilot light is lite before it opens up the valve and lets a whole bunch of gas out.

The thermocoupler has a thin film on it from the gas burning. Take a piece of steel wool and clean it up.

Wont stay lite

I recommend contacting the company and asking them to send you a new thermocouple. This is easy to change and will most likely solve your problem. When you contact them have all of the information ready such as model #, serial #, date of purcahse etc., whatever you have. good luck
