Its because of a faulty charger more than the battery but you could try changing the battery and charger both that should improve the results.
but the piece getting hot might be due to moisture in the piece thus a shorting of some sort, my advice switch to a different piece sell it off, as the v3 circuitry is too complicated for repairs.
