Hello Sunny, welcome to "fixya". I'm not entirely sure which model kenmore you are inquiring about ( kenmore is only a "sears" brand name and are made by several manufacturer's, depending on model ) but I'll suggest the most common remedy for the most common problem. It is likely a clogged sump area hence blocking water circulation to upper rack and will need to be cleaned out. First remove the bottom rack so you can work on the pump cover freely. With a vise grip or pliers hold the middle spray arm nut/screw and spin the spray arm off. With the spray arm removed you'll now need to remove the upper rack supply tube, grab it with one hand in the middle ( center of pump/filter assy) and one hand toward the back of the tub where you'll see it "fitted" to the supply tub going "up", carefully turning it to the right should allow it to come off. Now remove the 4 torx screws holding the filter in place and pull off filter...straight up.( you can grab it with pliers is need be, just be careful not to bust it obviously ) Once removed, if you observe inside the sump area ( pump well, use a drop light or flashlight ) you'll likely see a lot of food, debris, or undesolved detergent. ( it's o.k. most people use too much detergent ) There is also a fine screen & chopper under the gray plastic cover down in the sump you will likely need to access and clean. It too comes off, some have a single torx screw to the left, other's do not. Remove it and inspect the chopper and screen are either 1) intact and not broken...it's typically obvious if the chopper is loose from the impeller, Or 2) the screen is completely blocked and covered with food and other debris. Make a good effort to clean it thoroughly and run a cycle with "white vinegar" when you re-assemble the unit. Of course all this info will be useless if the dishwasher is made by someome other than "Whirlpool" or if you are not able to perform this procedure yourself, but that is the most commom problem and remedy for the symptom you described. Let me know how you make out, what you find, or if I can assist you further. Thank you for visiting "fixya" and please take a moment to rate the info provided for you here. Good luck. Macmarkus :)

Top rack not getting water or washed

Check (or have someone check) your impeller - it is probably located under a cover in the bottom of the dishwasher - you might need a hex screwdriver to access it.

Anyway, this needs to spin, if it's stuck, your water pressure goes WAY down, and the top rack just gets a little wet instead of sprayed.

Have Kenmore Elite 665 11yrs old, bakes soap on dishes top and bottom racks. Tried powder and liquid soap,no difference.Tried water heat with no rinse dry,no difference.

That seems like it's probably related to the recent ban on phosphates in dishwashing soaps. Quite a number of people have found that their dishwashers aren't working as well and are leaving spots and soap behind now that phosphates are not being used.
A little vinegar may help, but the best answer would be to use a water softener.

Dishes not clean?

Check all the water jet orfices in the moving arm. Try cleaning without loading the top rack.

If cleans well, mostly the upper rack dishes not arranged properly.

I hope you are using the main wash detergents. Rinse aid is just to remove the stains after the main wash rinse.

Bottom rack cleans fine, top rack doesn't clean at all - can I take apart the top spray arm?

yes, the spray arm can be removed and cleaned out.

Also, clean the 3rd (very top spray area) located attached to the top of the dishwasher. You want to make sure this small (1 inch size) piece can spin freely, so water can rinse the upper rack items.

Dishes on top rack don't get clean

The following suggestions will greatly enhance the ability of your dishwasher to clean all of the dishes thoroughly:

1. Rinse all of the food off of the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher.

2. Run the hot water into the sink until it is as hot as it gets before you start the dishwasher.

3. Do not pack the dishes into the dishwasher, just put in a reasonable number without crowding or stacking them on either shelf.

4. Pull the top shelf all the way out to be sure that the water connection at the rear of the top shelf is connected. Sometimes, this connector comes disconnected preventing the water from entering the top spray assembly.

THese things should make a huge difference.

Good luck with this and please rate my answer. Thanks. Joe

Kenmore Elite Ultra Wash Dishwasher - top rack arm not spinning

Hi: I just posted a similar problem, but found a solution. After taking the arm, etc. apart (and verifying no blockages), I thought maybe the lack of water pressure was being caused by the fact that there are TWO holes for the top spray arm (higher and lower rack setting) on my model. ie. that water was being forced out of both holes, causing a drop in water pressure, which was causing the top spray arm to stop spinning. I plugged the unused hole with a wine bottle cork (to keep the water from spraying out the unused hole), and voila, it now works.

I wish all appliance fixes were this easy...!

Kenmore DW model 15999 Lower Spray Tower Came off

Yes, I was able to get it fixed.
The spray tower actually fits in the rack (I had thought it fit in the top of the lower spray arm - wrong!)

If you were to look at the spray tower itself, it has 2 little clip like plastic protrusions that with a little twist will clip onto the lower rack!

Push the lower rack in and you can see where the center would be, (right over the middle of the lower spray arm ).

Now pull out the rack and take the spray tower and slip it under the rack up thru the bottom in the position you noted was the center (from above).

Now with the spray tower in place, slide the rack back inside the dishwsher and you will see that the tower will be sitting directly over the top of the exact middle of the lower spray arm.

Voila!

Dishes not getting clean

brittgee, there has been a number of service flashes on this model. One that has to do with the upper spray arm assy. Complaint is poor washability; gritty glasses, food redeposited on glasses, especially in the corners. They redesigned the upper spray arm to improve water spray to all corners of the upper rack. The new part number is 8269022. They also redesigned the third level spinner for more consistant rotation and better washability. This was also under a service flash. Part number.8193768. Other reasons for poor wash would be; low water temperature, rinse aid disp. not working, loading etc. Catriver...post back.
