Question about Philips Magnavox 51MP392H Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Blue Color Convergence wont adjust

I saw your answer to the guy who asked about fixing his tv himself, and was wondering if I could do the same. My Magnavox 51MP392H/17 will not allow me to adjust the blue convergence up or down, only left and right. It appears to be about one inch low on the manual convergence screen. Is this something I can tackle myself?
Thanks,

I have the same problem and replaced both IC's with better 150's and replaced all the 12 metal film resistors with 6.8 ohm parts. I did this 3 times now and still cant get the BLUE to move up and down, are there any other parts that control BLUE up/down other then the IC STK392-120's and the 12 (6.8 ohm) resistors? what do those transistors control?

I posted my detailed problem else where but wrong spot on this site I'm going to repost it in this message thanks for reading...

OK, I got a good one for you techies...

so I replaced the ICconvergence chips and my 12 resistors, theapparently my 6.8 ohmresistors were not the right type "not metalfilm?" or my solder job wasnot up to par, either way 2 burned up. Ireplace then and the ICs withall new chip this time the quality ones.the TV run stable the redadjusts fine

    HOWEVER,

    1. The Blue convergence with not move up and down just left & right. I've tripled checked the sodder even redone them and checked the ohms they are good... red works perfect, green is bent on top

What else controls the the "Blue convergence up and down?"
I read the parts manual online but can't decide if those 3 prong Transistors effect the convergence control and if so which one?

    2. the Green "non movable fixed color" has a warp/bend top center TV screen the top two center mulit point convergence points warp left. see below crued sketch, also most of the center multi points red/blue are right on BUT the outer ring red/blue + are pulled IN away from green
IGNORE THE DOTS, I needed them to hold the space to keep the lines from moving to the edg of screen in drawing for the GREEN screen bend which remains constant after all 3 IC replacements attempts

Yes by all means . I will post a link where you can get your replacement ICs along with free installation instructions with pictures. They also provide free on-line instant messaging while your doing the repair which only takes about an hour from start to finish. I am one of the support techs. Your model uses STK392-110 or STK392-120 either IC interchanges with each other except the 120 is a better IC runs cooler.Heres the link. You will need to replace both ICs

I have some distored blue color across the screen

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

The green color seprate from red and blue

If either blue or Red will not adjust in some direction this 2003 model has a bad convergence IC; it uses two STK-392-560 convergence IC chips that you can buy on Ebay(Suburban Electronics is the best source) for less then 13 dollars plus shipping--most of the time just need to replace both and then adjust the set--I have fixed hundreds of these sets---if this has been helpful give me a vote here--if you need direct assistance-=-

usually this can be fixed right in your home--I know---I do a lot of them here in the San Diego area where I live.

I got this TV for FREE from a guy posting it on craigslist because he saw "BLUE SWIRL LINES" also knows as "Retrace Line" on the screen and he went to several repair people and got high repair costs so he was giving it away for free, but i found a guide that tells you how to adjust the tv to make the blue or green or red lines go away, aparantly the line show up because the voltage on the color ray gun tubes that get out of adjustment.
