Lo and behold, some light oil on the stainless bars solved the problem.

Thanks for the tip about the oil. I was having the same problem and that took care of it.

How do I increase the margins on the typewriter

To set a margin beyond the left or right margin, move the carrier (or cursor) to that margin, press the Margin Release key, then proceed to move the carrier (or cursor) to the desired position. Then, press the Left or Right margin key to set the new margin. A beep will sound indicating the new margin has been set. When you set a new left or right margin, the previous margin is automatically cleared.

Alternatively, you can type beyond the right margin by pressing the Margin Release key and then continue typing when the carrier (or cursor) stops at the right margin. To type beyond the left margin, press the Margin Release key and then the Backspace key to move the carrier (or cursor) to the position where you want to start typing.

Remember to always use genuine Swintec ribbons and lift-off tapes for your Swintec 7040, which can be found at Swintec Typewriter Supplies .

My Swintec 7000 will not let me tab further than an inch from the left margin. All attempts to clear it have failed. Tab Clear and Margin release have not worked. Thanks, John

Tab to the R. stopping place press don't hold the margin release key space to the locationyou want the R. margin press R. margin key.
If this dosen't work turn off the machine and check to be sure the carrier will move back and forth. Put a few drops of WD40 on the silver shaft the guides the carrier.

Can't get the left margin to change, it is stuck way over on the right side and when I hit return it goes to about the center of the typewriter

Hi,
On carriage return the machine locates LH margin. In your case the LH margin is set in centre.
Press the margin release key when at the margin location position.
Use the backspace key to return to the extreme left.
Space forward to were you want the new margin.
Press Margin Left set.

My IBM selectric II typewriter carriage stuck in right margin

Sounds like the return lever arm is not putting enough pressure on the return clutch, or the clutch is slipping. The exp key uses the same clutch but the pressure comes from your finger. Theres no way you can fix this yourself. Get an IBM mechanic.

If it is the left margin, you touch the carriage return button to find the current position of the left margin, then touch the mar release button and backspace to the new left margin location, then depress the left mar key. You should here a beep. You are done.
