Question about Typewriters

Selectric II Typewriter

We came into work this morning and turned on the typewriter. It was making a popping noise. It will return, tab over, etc., with the exception of the keys typing. I have no idea what could be wrong with it.

It was working when we left Friday and now its Monday and it just stopped. Anybody have any idea what might be wrong with it?

This may sound stupid but lift it up a few inches and let it fall to desk. one of the character keys could be stuck underneath and this will jog it free. also see if you can shift. see if it makes a noise when you shift. It might be a shift clutch spring problem. I have been fixing these for 30 years. Lawrence

Your on/off switch may be bad but it sounds like your motor needs to be flushed, lubed, and possibly have a bushing installed.

Sounds like the return lever arm is not putting enough pressure on the return clutch, or the clutch is slipping. The exp key uses the same clutch but the pressure comes from your finger. Theres no way you can fix this yourself. Get an IBM mechanic.

I have a IBM Correcting Selectric II and I'm having trouble clearing out the margins. Can you help?

space to the right side of the machine, hold down the tab clear key and hit return.

If the carriage stops partway back, one of the tab stops has rotated too far on the tab bar.

remove the platen and paper pan, go to the stuck stop, rotate it to the rear of the machine to line up with the other tabs

IBM Selectric II typewriter stuck in correcting position

If you know how to remove the right dust cover (black inside the T/W below the carrier) next to the R. side frame is the correction set up mech. spray some WD40 on the arms especially where they pivot, they should free up.

It sounds like the cycle shaft is not fully in home
position. With the machine OFF, try to turn the print shaft (the steel shaft with the single groove that goes through the carriage) top towards the back of the machine. Then turn the machine on. Try the space bar first. If it works, your machine probably needs the cycle clutch spring adjusted or replaced.

Is the key stuck in the down position? If you pull the key off you should see a spring underneath. Maybe out of position or damaged.

If you know how to remove the cabinet and dust covers spray every moving part with WD40 especially the cams and parts under the R. dust cover.

The return clutch torque limiter is off or broken. If you take the right dust cover off it is on the turning hub around the middle of the typewriter. a small spring about 1.25 inches long with a hook on the end. I have been fixing these for 35 years. good luck. Lawrence
