Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

We are having issues with our side by side refrigerator. It is a Kitchen Aid Superba. Model # is KSRS25IKBL01. The refrigerator side is warm. We turned the setting to the coolest setting and it still is not cold enough. The unit up in the top left hand corner on the refrigerator side is making noises so wondering if that is the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

I was told by another FixYa expert that it could be the condenser coils that are clogged with dust and lint. I did check this and there is a lot of dust and lint that needs to be cleaned out and that might fix the issue. The problem I have how do you remove the grill in front of the condenser coils to be able to get rid of the dust and link on the condenser coils? Please help. also should i unplug the refrigerator when removing the dust and lint from the condenser coils? Thanks

Is the freezer cold?
Have you done anything to troubleshoot so far?

The Air diffuser IS located at the top left of the fridge section. It is responsible for adjusting the amount of cold aire let in the fridge to keep the desired temperature.

However there could be other issues as well (like a failed thermostat or controller). Since it is making noise, however, we can assume it is probably not operating properly. (plastic gears stripped in the transmission most likely)

#15 is the air Diffuser.

on THIS PAGE you can see the part, and also a DIYers storey on how to replace it.

If you have additional concerns - let me know.

Thanks!!

the freezer is working properly and is cold. I have not done any trouble shooting yet. I should be able to get this part at a local parts store. Do you think all of the dust and lint could be a problem as well on the condenser coil and should I try to remove the grill to clean this out?

Unfortunately - FixYa does not have the best verification process for its "experts" (yet).

There are "experts" giving advice that have never laid hands on a refrigerator other than to open it to retrieve food - to try and earn a quick buck... hoping you do not rate the advice given and they are paid by default.

If the condensor were that dirty - the freezer would also be warm - and the compressor would run non-stop. While it wouldnt hurt to clean - it is NOT causing the problem in the fridge section.

The Diffuser is a damper which opens and closes via the signal from the controller based on readings from the thermostat.... to keep the correct temperature. Since you are hearing a clicking - it can be assumed the gearing is frozen, or broken - and not allowing the damper to open

A local appliance shop should be able to get that part for you. If not - the link I gave is a trusted and often suggested source.

    Thanks!!

P.S. Read the DIY Tip under the picture of the part (2nd link) that confirms the clicking noise is a not-so-good feature :)

Hello,

Inspect the gasket for dirt or debris that could prevent it from sealing. If you find any, remove the large debris, then wash the gasket, using a scrub brush and warm, soapy water.

Check the gasket for cracks or tears that can let cold air escape. If you find any, replace the gasket.

Check for coil problems. The compressor can overheat due to dust buildup on condenser coils. If so, vacuum the coils. If there's ice buildup on evaporator coils due to bad defrost heater, call a professional. If there's a squealing sound inside the refrigerator, it's like a failing evaporator-coil fan. If so, call a professional to help fix it because you may not be able to do this in other not to complicate issues.

Take care.

It is making a squealing sound in the upper left corner. So you are saying that I should let a professional fix the failing evaporator-coil fan as it could complicate other issues? Is that what I heard? Is it difficult to replace? What types of issues might I run into if I try this on my own?

    Thanks

It is making a squealing sound in the upper left corner. So you are
saying that I should let a professional fix the failing evaporator-coil
fan as it could complicate other issues? Is that what I heard? Is it

    this on my own?
    Hello,

Down at the base there's a grill that runs all long the length of the
refrigerator and air is actually drawn in through this grill and goes
over the condenser coils that cools the refrigerant that actually runs
your, your refrigerator. Now over a period of time, a lot of dust and
lint and everything can, can build up in there, so one thing you want to
do is you want to take a vacuum cleaner and you want to keep this
cleaned out periodically. So if you're having some problems with your
refrigerator, it could be that that has gotten so clogged up with dirt
and lint, that you're not getting enough air flow to cool the
refrigerant and get the cooling that you need. if you can check this and clean it better.

The evaporation-coil fan is a fragile hardware in the refrigerator, that
is why i said in other not to complicate issues, but its a thing you
can fix, if you want to do it yourself.

    Take care.

Compressor runs continuously, and center bar (heat dissipator) is extremely hot to touch.

Molly, The hot bar is a normal part of the sealed system (compressor) operation. The relay they told you about is on the back of the compressor and I would not recommend you changing that. The refrigerator is a balanced system, the freezer air removes the heat from the refrigerator side. If the compressor runs all the time, look for food close to the edge and not letting the doors close completely. Move items back. Don't over pack the freezer, the air must circulate. The refrigerator of today runs longer and uses less power that the old refrigerator. If you are still having issues with this model call a authorized Kitchen repair person in you area and ask how much they charge to come to your house and give an estimate.
