Problem getting belt around motor shaft... Eureka The BOSS

I have removed cover and can put belt over brush roller just can not find clearance to put belt over motor shaft???

I have done that but it appears that the motor shaft is connected to the plastic. The tension does not seem to change whether it is locked or not. I am wondering if I should try to remove the top cover?

Make sure the vacuum is in the upright (locked position) - when you lower the handle, this puts tention on the belt. If it is in the upright and locked position, there is plenty of clearance (unless you have the wrong belt.

The brush roller could be worn and in need of replacement. Some Eureka uprights have a wire guide that prevents the belt from slipping off the motor shaft.

My Eureka The boss Smartvac Model #4870 roller brush won't turn even on the highest setting and the belt smells hot. we took the belt off. How can you tell if it needs replaced?

Just by what you explained I can tell that it needs to be replaced. The belt doesn't have to be broken to need replacing, if it is stretched and worn then it will slip on the motor shaft and not turn the brush roll and get hot. Here is a link to the belts you need and the manual which has instructions:

Roller brush will not turn on Eureka "The Boss Power Plus" 12 amp

Depending on the model there will be a couple of screws on the top plastic cover. The cover lifts off and the belt is then serviceable. On some models you will need to remove some parts on the bottom too to get the roller out.
In any case just look for screws that hold the covers on and explore a bit. You can't break anything.

I want to replace the belt on an upright eureka vacuum model 4481, any ideas?

I just replaced the belt on my 4481. Very simple. Be sure unit is unplugged. Unlock handle and let it lay down. Remove two screws on plastic cover. I purchased my belt at target for 2.54. Part number anywhere is Eureka U. Remove the roller brush. Loop belt around drive motor first and then around roller brush inserting the roller back into place belt side first. Replace cover and your ready to go. 10 min fix.

Changing the belt

Have you pulled the roller out? Once you take the bottom plate off, the roller should slide out of its slot. Then you should easily be able to access the motor shaft.

Belts

There should be 2 or 3 screws on the top cover, then you can remove the cover and the brush roll and belt are in the open. Put the belt around the motor shaft, then around the brush roll and stretch it until it goes into the place for the brush roll. While out, check the brush roll ends, make sure they turn freely, if not, then replace it.
